Post match: Man Utd v Liverpool (EPL 13/5/21 8.15pm)

Nat’s own explanation was that he put his leg up late, as at first he thought it was wide, but then realized it was going in, so he put his leg up, but too late…

Obviously Philipps is defending real time, so he deserves sympathy for a very minor error. I looked at the replay multiple times, from the angle behind the shot too. To my eye it looked like it started just outside the post but was coming back in - just, and would probably have finished in the back of the net, possibly in off the post.

PS - as for the wider discussion on Nat Philipps, I think expectations need to be factored into the reckoning.

So… everyone has low expectations to begin with, as he is well down the pecking order. But then he exceeds expectations. And not only that, but does so in a heart-on-sleeve sort of manner that commands respect. Then finally, going on last night’s game, he plays his part in a very good 4-2 win.

In light of all that, it’s nice to be nice and the lad deserves praise.

However, let’s look to next season and imagine a post injury scenario…

Ahead of VVD? No chance.
Ahead of Gomez? Nope.
Ahead of Matip? No.

And now let’s add in a couple we are linked with…

Ahead of Konate? Nope.
Ahead of Kabak? No. (Though I’m willing to concede some might argue this one).

And now let’s keep going right down the pecking order…

Ahead of Williams? Probably, though Williams is younger and has grown leaps and bounds.
Ahead of Davies? Davies is a phantom, a figment of our imagination, so I’m ahead of him!

If only Nat Phillips was Italian or something people would love him. Twice the player Kabak is

I agree, it does look like the ball might be going to creep in the far post, just.

It was a no win situation for Nat - stick a leg out, own goal; leave the ball alone and it goes in, he is criticised for leaving it.

The real culprit for me, was Fab for not making it harder for wingnut to get the shot away.

In the end it didn’t matter, we beat the diving, cheating, dirty, ugly b@stards and that is all that matters.

The Mem and I are going to enjoy watching the match tonight without all the stress/tension we suffered last night.

To me it was Gini and Fabinho. Gini is far too passive and not pushing AWB hard enough so he got an easy pass, then Fabinho is caught ball watching and not tracking his runner.

This isn’t an isolated incident either, our midfield are terrible at letting runners go, I don’t know if it’s because Van Dijk etc. Would always mop up but it happens multiple times a game.

I thoroughly enjoyed that one.

Yeah this always puzzled me. Klopp is never cagy about City who has a better squad and always tries to take game to them.

This. You just can’t ignore such transgression.

The goal was everyone else’s fault other than the guy who volleyed it straight into our net. Clearing it elsewhere obviously wasn’t a viable option.

It’s always easy to blame the last man. If others had intervened earlier (e.g. Gini and Fab had closed their players down; Williams hadn’t moved out of the way of the ball) the situation might not have arisen.

I think that it was Nat’s intention to clear the ball, I don’t believe for a minute that he deliberately put the ball into our net.

Anthony “manc to the core” taylor has never given a second yellow to one of manure’s players, so why should he break the habit of a lifetime.

Anyway, it hardly constituted a tackle…

… in the Six Nations.

Intentional or not it’s a blatant error. And it’s an error whether Fabinho did his job (which he didnt).

that deserves more. Don’t let go.

Tonight’s quiz.

When is handball given as a handball?

Isn’t the difference it was clearly deflected off his thigh and therefore not a penalty?

From IFAB

There is now no handball if the ball is deflected onto the arm

There will be no penalty if the ball touches a player’s hand/arm immediately from their own head/body/foot or the head/body/foot of another player.

That’s the first time I’ve seen the rugby tackle on Mane, I missed the last 10 minutes. How did he get away with that? And not surprisingly, it wasn’t shown on Match of the Day, so just glossed over by the BBC.

But there’s no agenda, according to some.

When the ball hits an arm, that isn’t wearing a Man Utd shirt.

Good point, except the ball isn’t deflected onto the manurite player’s hand. There is no perceptive change of direction:
