Crazy idea but could we not try Bobby as a midfielder? He spent most of the game there, you then put Carvalho on the left, Salah central, Diaz right…
And…one big question…when are they all back…
It’s something I’ve mentioned I don’t think it’s the craziest idea and probably should be considered.
its getting mental isnt it?
i mean, its the point we actually thinking its well worth a shot.
how did it come to this, weve been so good for so long
I’d expect the tactical side of defense is possibly a sticking point but considering Milner did little to no tracking back it’s not exactly going to be missed.
I think we need to be far more active going forward if it is back to outscoring the opponent so be it, two options really, we revert back to the safe 1-0’s tactic of a few years back (won’t work) or we just go for it and hope to outscore.
I think we are a bit stuck at the moment.
Something needs to change, I really am surprised why we’ve not gone to a 4231 personally… I’d expect Klopp doesn’t want both Carvalho and Elliott starting, but based on the last games they’ve been our best players.
The biggest problem seems to be we’ve changed our tactical set up to accomodate Thiago, but when he’s injured we litterally have no-one who can come in and do a similar job yet we still play the same way. It’s crazy.
4231 like
We now have 2 players covering in front of the defence, one going to support the attack, one dropping based on the side we are overloading. It should help at both ends.
Just play the 4231/424 if Firmino is going to play. Having him as the lone striker is about as effective as Balotelli or Lambert in that role.
I’d genuinely rather have seen Tsimikas or Trent move in to the wide positions last night and have one of Diaz or Salah in the middle. The setup we started with in both the Fulham and United games led to some of the ugliest, most blunt football I’ve watched under Klopp.
Only Milner is one who would raise an eye brow to starting this game. Even Elliott Klopp has shown his willingness to throw him in in big games. Yes we have injuries and that is problematic for the long run, but it is not comparable to 2 years ago. Then we were forced into playing 2 championship lever players to make up the numbers. Last night we still put out a strong team. Its just one where the players are individually underperforming.
The more I see of this lot the more I wonder if Klopp and co didnt undercook them during the pre-season. Was there concern of the carry over effects of last season, and the danger of getting too close to peak too early in a long season and as a result left them starting the season a step off the pace. All over the place we look to be making tired decisions…Trent’s rugby tackle of elanga rather than getting his feet into position to make a real tackle, Virgil being on the backfoot when the ball broke to Martial for the second goal. All over the pitch I see us not picking up second balls the way this side has dominated so often. It’s tough to see these things and not conclude that physically we’re just not there right now.
If the camera angle isn’t perfectly in line then we wont have the right perspective to be able to make those gut calls, as was the case last night.

I’m going by the lines on the grass, which VAR also seemed to be level with. Nothing to do with the camera angle. On that basis I thought he was offside. If the rules have changed then fair enough, but I’ve never heard of the idea of ‘tolerance’ before.
The footballing Gods were certainly favouring the diving cheat Bruno. Would’ve have loved that slice to end up in the net. And don’t get me started on those fake cramps.
In the CL final, Real pulled that trick out to disrupt our rhythm and it led to their goal.
We were shit in the opening 30 mins. Need to either come out flying or do game management in the opening 10 mins. Not this halfway house.
Dale Johnson explains it here.
“It gives tolerance level, or margin of error, of 5cm back to the attacking player, meaning they can be just in front of the defender but the goal will stand due to the possible inaccuracies in the system.”
Our trap just failed by the slightest of margins. Shit happens. Just like on another day that Bruno miskick would’ve been an OG.
Doesnt matter. It has everything to do with the camera angle. When it is not in line, as was he case on that goal, the eye test is not going to be reliable when its close.
The fact there is so much complaint over this “tolerance level” when it is not new (was in place last season as well) and is pretty much what most fans were calling out for, is just further evidence that complaints about VAR are mostly a crutch.
FWIW, I think there is some unhelpful wording in that Dale’s Jonson piece. The system did not identify Rashford as offside and ignore it. Instead, it was able to determine that the line drawn for him was fractionally ahead of that of Gomez, but does not view such small differences as offside because the system does not have the sufficient level of precision to be confident in differences so small.
Is this ‘tolerance level’, the one if 95% of the attacker is behind the defender/line…and only his toe/foot/knee are in front of the defender/line…its classed as onside…
Or it hits Martinez arm instead of his armpit.
As per Jurgen……
“We should have won this game, I know it sounds ridiculous but that is how I saw it,” he said.
I think I watched the wrong game.
@Limiescouse
If you don’t have me on ignore…
Genuine question.
In your opinion was Rashford offside?
Maybe he was smoking the same gear as Gomez and Van Dijk.
The issue is it is not really an issue where one’s opinion has any value. You can say that you don’t understand from the images shown why it is onside, but that is not the same thing. But you know, these are conversations where people show an inability to tell the difference between objective and subjective, so I get this response probably wont land.
Didn’t see a single poster here suggesting that. Deserved to lose even with the dodgy offside. Hope he’s saying something different behind closed doors!
