Post match: Man Utd v Liverpool (FAC 17/3/24 3.30pm)

I think I have got my head around this result now. Like all games we concede it has nothing to do with our quality and ability. We approached this game with the plan A attitude that we needed to conserve energy for the run in and manage our retuning injured. When you do that, the team message of maximum effort and win at all costs is lost. In the process, decisions were made to take players off early and see out the win in comfort.
The reality was that it became a much tighter game when Mo and Robbo left the field.
That was the game changer and a big factor in the loss. Cody’s lackadaisical involvement was more in keeping with plan A than the changing situation demanded and as a result gave them an opportunity to get back in the game. Up to that point they were a shambles. It did though even the score and forced extra time. We were not mentally prepared for that and pressure and fatigue kicked in leading to the brain fart moment from us and them scoring a winner.
Lessons to be learned (and they will)

  1. Think carefully about the Mo “effect” before taking him off
  2. If you do make sure that you fire up his replacement
  3. Never let these Mancs win again against us….ever!!!

I think Klopp had to make that change, I think he alluded to managing his minutes and at 2-1 and the cups we have to play for.

Effectively this was their season.

I’m not sure if that’s the case, given how we normally do that in league games when we’re not leading or even when we’re trailing. How often have we said this season that the subs won us the game? And it’s not even by some magic, it’s just because they’re fresher.

If Klopp have left Salah on and he got injured in the 85 minute and we won 2-1 would it have been worth it.

I don’t think it would.

I don’t think taking Salah off would have prevented their equaliser, would it?

No it wouldn’t. He probably needed to though, Klopp said a few weeks ago about managing him.
