He also made an important save at 2-0. Which had the chance been scored would have made for a very ‘squeaky bum’ last ten minutes.

Just a small point, and I’m probably being pedantic? But I’m sure Taylor blew for a foul by young Stefan on the touchline before Fab made the challenge that he was booked for? The resultant free kick was taken from where Fab committed the foul? Surely it should have been taken from the touchline?

Anyhoo Ali caught the free kick and sent Mo on his way which resulted in Pope’s sending off. So it’s all good.

Made up with the three points. I’ll take points over performance for all of our remaining games. But I do wish we’d stop giving possession away so cheaply.

But Jota also had two headers and should have done better on his run in.

There is a very fair point to make on the first one and he deserves a vote for keeping it 0-0 knowing our recent form and how we have started.

After that however bar being good with his legs he has nothing much to do until late in the second half.

He may well be motm but he isn’t that far ahead, the way some people are suggesting is we were under the strain for large parts when in fact most of our chances were far better than there ones.

Newcastle had two 1 on 1s, 2 or 3 big chances from set pieces and the one from St Maximin that Alisson tipped over. Just from the top of my head.

They created a lot for a team with 10, this wasn’t a team just feeding off scraps.

Alisson very much a deserved MOTM, he made it comfortable. It was also his excellent pass that led to Pope being sent off.

I did say in the in game thread that we could easily have had 6, but we were against 10 men and didn’t look comfortable

Sorry not really seeing the big chances from set pieces bar the header against the bar, mostly from difficult angles that flew over the bar.

I’ll give you the play on the kick, as I said one of a couple who could win it. Game wasn’t that in the balance though especially that second half. I’d go and watch it again.

The ASM one that hit the bar was also at very best a half chance. An off balance shot on his left foot while under pressure from 18 yards out. Alisson would have been disappointed not to save that one.

And if nothing else itnwas a good example of why us pushing forwards to ‘kill’ the game would have been an awful idea. Their forwards are quick and can run at exposed defenders which is what ASM was trying to do there.

It has to be one of the worst attempted headers I have ever seen. Took his eyes off the ball, to improve the comedy value he kicked Trippier up in the air.

On a couple of refereeing decisions, how did Nunez get penalised when he injured his shoulder and Dan Burn on the Sideline went through Mo to get the ball right under the Assistant Refs nose?

Mate, you’re so close to connecting the dots.

But that’s the point. We didn’t push forward and they were still causing problems with two or three players against a set defence. They all looked scared to even close down Saint-Maximin.

Wasn’t good enough by any stretch of the imagination.

Can’t really agree with that one. They hit the bar twice and had a one on one after going down to ten men. By any stretch those are good chances. The Wilson one in particular was ghastly; Bobby casually passing it to him just in their half and suddenly its three on two. Was also another in the second half where the ball in from the right caught Gomez completely off and let the Newcastle player receiving all alone with the ball in the box. Luckily for us he didn’t realise how much time he had and rushed the shot.

That said, we created enough at the other end to also score so the result itself is a fair reflection of the game, just saying that we coughed up clear chances even playing against ten which is a little annoying.

Sandcastle were down by two goals and one man. Their only option was to attack, attack, and attack. Could they have scored a goal, possibly. Could we have scored another goal, possibly. We won because we were better over the whole game.

I’m really surprised to see negative comments about the performance. To me it looked like we were in energy conservation mode from about 30mins.

The problem is it doesn’t suit us, we start misplacing passes and leaving ourselves far too open. Klopp said we didn’t handle being against 10 very well in his presser. But it’s done and bar a bit of a chore to watch it’s a freaking huge result.

We can bury our heads in the sand if we like, we’ve been doing it all season. I read similar comments about the 3-1 against Villa, how we were conserving energy in the second half and that was why we were ceding chances. Not long after we got stuffed by Brentford 3-1, Brighton 3-0 and Wolves 3-0.

Gomez and Robertson in particular were so passive, poorly positioned on many occasions and didn’t get tight enough to the Newcastle men. And our defending from corners looked all at sea again, just like it did at Brentford.

We don’t need to go overboard, yesterday was more positive than negative. It wasn’t a shitshow of a win like Leicester, we did deserve it. Still, we should be doing better.

That’s how I saw it too. I see lots of ‘outplayed’ comments but I thought we were totally in control, then when the subs were made we had a bit more energy and had two huge chances to deliver the final nail but didn’t. We weren’t too clean with the ball, and Newcastle had a couple of big chances that Ali brilliantly saved, but I didn’t feel we were ever threatened. Did everything we needed to.

Do you feel the team are in the same state of mind as when we played Villa? We are the first team to beat Newcastle at home this season, and they haven’t failed to score at home since last April ( I hope I got that stat right!). Two clean sheets, against two very difficult opposition ( for different reasons).

It’s progress.

Why not? That was just after the world cup, having finished the first part of the season strongly. We all expected much better performances from then on.

Newcastle have done well but they’re not invincible, and yesterday they were missing their best player. Their results without Guimaraes have been poor - 1 win in 8 games.

We’ve had these moments before this season, only time will tell how much progress has been made. That said, the defending yesterday wasn’t good. I didn’t see much progress in how we defend from corners. That’s all I’m saying.

Let’s not pretend we had Newcastle at arm’s length yesterday and we just controlled the game easily because we were in a good position, that’s not really what happened.
