Post Match: Newcastle v Liverpool (EPL 18/2/23 5.30pm)

Three points are very welcome but the performance lacked any intensity. Said that we had to sharpen up in the box but very poor considering the chances missed in the last quarter. Alli MOM .

Didn’t see the whole game but what I did see we suffered a lot from being too “relaxed” and yet again poor decision making in the final third. Yes I’m looking at you Robbo but he wasn’t alone in that. Always worries me when Ali gets motm.

Points most welcome however. Gives me a little more hope of a top 4 finish.

Smashed 'em!
Nunez managed to find the net, that should scare a few!

TĂ´ be fair his save to keep it at 0-0 is the reason I gave him a vote.

Newcastle were on fumes around the time they missed that second so would have made it nervy beyond that everything went over or wide.

For me it was more the moment, first goes in it could have gone like most weekends recently, did make me view it as a team who have the week off Vs a team that plays Madrid on Tuesday at times.

Once again I think the quality of chances created against us is being massively overstated. They hit the bar from a corner, which is a weak area for us, and had a few pop shots from weird angles or distances. Meanwhile we had several very good chances at the end of the game to kill it but ultimately didn’t need them.

The game was completely over after about the 70th minute, Newcastle had blown out their definitely-not-drug-enhanced legs and we had a few more chances to score.

Stupidest thing would have been to try and attack their 10 men and let their very quick forwards get into 1v1 situations with our CBs. We minimised those chances, forced low quality shots and personally I never felt like we were in any real danger of losing the lead.

Professional performance.

Ali made a big save at 0-0 and set up the chance that got their keeper sent off. Other than being commanding at a few set pieces he didn’t really have much to do. He just did everything very tidily.

Important win. Very much needed. Performance far from great where really it should have been more comfortable. Top four still within grasp so that’s a plus but still lots to do.

Agreed with this, been interesting to see what expected goals was without those Jota chances at the end. We were marginally ahead on 2.37 to 2.00 but I assume the two that Alisson saved were those two.

Of course if that first one goes in who knows it has been us too much and too recently but once at 2-0 I think we would have won 11 v 11, the players and manager seemed to allude to that.

Not sure how Trent hasn’t got more votes, passing was outstanding.

Pretty shit performance defensively again, Gomez and Robertson were very poor. Was hoping for more than that.

Still, some improvement. Bajcetic good again.

Trent put in some of his best passes of the season, there was a low cross to the back post just after we went 2-0 up that Trippier was able to clear on the stretch but it was an absolutely gorgeous cross. Love seeing him play with that confidence again.

More than happy to beat these wankers but the performance was poor. Scored 2 great goals pretty much against the run of play and then huffed and puffed our way through the last 70.
It would have been hard to pick which team was down to 10 if you didn’t already know. Our whole game was slow with no conviction at all in the final 3rd.
Alisson MOTM with 2 great saves, also went for Trent and Nunez. Defence is still suspect, midfield slightly improved and the attack is still far too profligate.
Don’t see us beating Madrid over 2 legs which leaves a battle for 4th as all we have to play for. It’s doable but only with a 20% improvement all over the pitch.

Just don’t understand what Gomez thinks when he takes up some positions.

Both Almiron and Wilson had 1 v 1’s with Ali?

Almiron’s was before the red card, I was talking about how we managed it afterwards.

Wilson’s doesn’t stick out in my mind. Maybe it was a good chance, I don’t remember it at all.

I voted for MOTM and completely forgot Alisson. I should have voted for him as he made some big saves and it easily could have been a different result without him. I might be used to him doing this, so I took it for granted, but he is the best in the world and I am delighted he’s a red.

There were several things wrong today, but what was right was a clean sheet, and two lovely goals.

The new strikers are starting to make an impact, and it was lovely to see Nunez do well and score a good goal. Gakpo is improving as well, knitting it together and offering a goal threat too.

Still miles short of our best, and we won’t get back to that until the midfield is refreshed, but we are at least looking a bit more like it.

Six points behind Newcastle with a game in hand, and they might be the main threat to us for top four.

Six points form the last two games gives us hope again. And fortunately we are playing a bit better now that we are facing Real Madrid.

Anything can happen in the CL.

Hard to say what would have happened had they not had Pope sent off. Maybe they would have pulled goals back but we would not have taken our foot off the pedal and saved legs. Fact is we scored two good goals , both very well taken, and we cruised to victory. Would have preferred to see Allison less busy but we did what we had to do. Really looking forward to Tuesday now.

‘It’s too early to say we are there again’

Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to BBC Sport: "Against 10 men for that long time you could of course create more and score more but we lost in that moment a little bit of momentum and didn’t get it 100% back and left the door open for Newcastle.

"In the end, with our situation, someone told me the last time we had a clean sheet away from home it was in April, so I’m happy.

"The goals we scored were perfect against 11. We played really well, but then against 10 we lost for a moment the grip and couldn’t get it back. But we still had our moments where we should have scored more in the second half.

"After you score a third one it’s definitely over. We didn’t so we had to fight until the end. And we needed the long leg of James Milner who was outstanding again.

"We are a step further forward.

"Both goals were outstanding. The pass from Trent [Alexander-Arnold] for Darwin [Nunez] and from Mo [Salah] to Cody [Gakpo] [was] top class. A bit more of that would have been really great, but for today it’s absolutely fine.

"When you are not in your best moment you have to fight for this, and that’s what we did we got our second win in a row. It feels great to be honest. We haven’t had this for ages so it’s a good day.

"We will see, we face one of the best teams in the world on Tuesday so it’s difficult. But it’s at Anfield so let’s go.

“It’s too early to say we are there again. But of course we will keep fighting and we will see.”

‘We didn’t react particularly well to red card’

FT: Newcastle 0-2 Liverpool

Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, speaking to Sky Sports: "Massive result, clean sheet, two wonderful goals and space for improvement. I thought we did really well – the red card probably would have been a wonderful goal as well if Pope hadn’t got his hand on the ball.

"Against 10 men we didn’t react particularly well. Newcastle had nothing to lose anymore. You could see they’re a top team with top character – they threw everything on the pitch. And we gave them too many set pieces.

"The most negative thing was that Darwin [Nunez] had to go off. We have to see how serious that is – hopefully not too much. We have to fight through these things. A third goal would have been extremely helpful, but we had to fight until the end.

"The relief of the 2-0, the red card, and all of a sudden one step less and the rhythm was gone. I wish we’d have done that better, but in the end I’m really happy we got it over the line.

“Diogo [Jota] could have scored. Bobby [Firmino] started really well and then lost two or three balls that pretty much gave them counter-attacks. Getting through this is the next step for them. Virgil [Van Dijk], playing 90 minutes was hard for him. All the rest was really good.”

Towards the end when Bobby gave the ball away in midfield and it was 3 v 2 with Fab labouring to get back and in the end he stopped trying

Liverpool have scored 44 premier league goals at Newsandcastle, only spurs 45 have scored more 45 in the era.
