The thing about Nunezā€™s first goal , there was some fat newcastle fan / cunt shouting at him while he was celebrating. Made a good sight

He doesnā€™t have to be able to beat the goalie, only that the foul robs him of a 1-1 with no expectation of a defender being able to get back to cover. How they have interpreted that to be the case with Virgil being goal side and running back along side Isak I have no idea.

In truth, we dont see incidents like this very often. Usually a foul by the last defender that sees a red card is one where they are beaten and the foul is a last attempt to stop the chance. That is not at all what happened here. Virgil just tried to nick the ball while covering the run. If if he does not try that and just continues to track the run then Isak is still decently covered. Heā€™d have to do some sort of trick to get his shot off and not have Virgil block it. Given that I think the ref should have continued to take Virgilā€™s presence into account on the question of there was a defender present able to cover Isak and I think he just misread the situation and defaulted to the more typical situation of looking at where the next defender was, ignoring that Virgil was completely still in play as a defender.

If Virgil doesnā€™t make the challengeā€¦ isnā€™t he ā€¦

Never mind, just read below. What i came on to ask. If Virgil doesnā€™t challenge, Isak doesnā€™t have clear run on goal?

If VVD sticks with him , heā€™s going to push Isak wider and wider. Unless he does a quick turn etc , thereā€™s no way heā€™s going to get a clear chance considering heā€™s right footed.

The mistake was in VVD misjudging (slightly) the timing of the tackle made much worse by the idiotic theatric dive by Isak.

I was also told off. She was in the kitchen and said I frightened the life out of her.

Haha I remember him, was hoping he would be on the second but sadly didnā€™t see him.

So why were Newcastle doing a lap of honour, after 3 games Shay?

Well that and the ā€œdare to dream after beating Villa on the opening dayā€.

They decimated villa tbh.

Anyway, that is 3 games played, 2 of which away against CL contending sides and weā€™ve conceded 3 goals. For all the complaints about our defense being shit only 1 of those goals has come in defending phase. The other 2 came from bad turnovers in situations that even the best defense cannot make up for.

I get that we look stretched at times, and that Alison has maybe titled the stats a bit, but is it also possible we are over dramatisizing our problems?

Saying that how do we judge Villa, they beat Everton and Burnley.

Not the cream of the crop is it. We will know a bit more about them next week.

Villa is a good side. Weā€™d be fools to take them lightly based on their performance at Newcastle. That said , Newcastle is a tough place to play with their crowd and their snide style of football. Not many CL contending teams will go there and get away with 3 points.
