You can all fucking moan about parking the bus, not playing, the possession, whatever. But if we’d turned up there and played the way you all seemed to want us to try and play, it would have been 6-0. Not theoretically 6-0. Not we’re lucky it wasn’t 6-0. Actually fucking 6-0.
PSG want to pull you out of shape, find gaps and cut through you.
Obviously I want us to go there, play them off the park and lay down a proper fucking marker for who we want to be. But we need to be head over heart here. We are not that team this season, and we are not in their league at all.
2-0 probably flatters us, and it probably puts the tie out of reach. But that was the right approach to the away leg, and I think you’re all fucking mad expecting us to go toe to toe with them.
Slot set up to come away with a one goal deficit. Two goals is too much. Could have been three or four behind.
Trying a new system looked like chicken in headlights in the first few minutes. Unlucky deflection to concede the first goal though. Rode our luck at times.
We didn’t create much. And of course, at 60 minutes, we could all feel the game drifting. Well, everyone except Slot. He seemed happy to let it drift. The inevitable second goal came.
Isak really shouldn’t be coming on in a quarter final for his first match after a long injury break. Best take it easy to be ready for next season.
Hugo was poor. Aside from the shooting chances, he tried to do too much once collecting the ball. When you are isolated up top wide left, you need to hold on to the ball when it comes. Time and time again, he would ge the ball and try a flick or take on three surrounding players.
Dom set up to press from the front, and Hugo behind him would just let a PSG midfielder free rather than attmepting to match Dom by closing the passing option (or passing lane).
Slot really feels like a dead man walking at this point. Leaving Mo on the bench (even though he is off form and confidence) is more of a statement from Slot I feel. Slot made four late changes, and kept the system the exact same. And we still got carved open.
If you’re going to put on Isak, why not let him go up front, instead of having to do donkey work wide right. No rhyme or reason to that sub in that position I feel.
Bar Wirtz and the keeper the rest were their usual garbage selves.
Fsg had the chance ro salvage something from this season by sacking slot last international break but they didnt.
2 games later our season is pretty much done.
Well played Mama. Some great saves. A combination of that, plus PSG wastefulness, stopped the score running up to half a dozen.
Edit
And what Mascot said about the set up. It was pragmatic and without it I hate to think what score they would have run up.
The gulf between the sides was evident. We’ve got our issues, and we’ve been going through all that for some time now. But PSG are a hell of a team to watch.
I know we’ve had some special Anfield nights and I know the crowd are amazing, but I really can’t see us retrieving this. I see another PSG win.
Slot will be a goner. The only question is whether the new man will be available to give us a potential little bounce in the Prem run in, or if Slot sees out the season. It would be strange for him to be sacked in between two legs against PSG, but surely it’s just a matter of time now.
Nah sorry Mascot I’m not having it. This is a guy who has moaned all season about teams not doing what he wants them to. PSG played the way they always do and he totally changed the shape and system and bottled it.
Seriously, what do they do on the training ground?
There are no triangles for players to pass the ball to; when there is a chance to pass, they either miss the pass altogether, or passed the ball behind the player. Players positions were awful. Under normal circumstance, I would be infuriated…But as I said earlier, I have no expectation anymore to even get any kind of emotions.
All i can say is, Mamardashvili saved us from a humiliating result. We are lucky, we are at a 2-0 deficit.
If we can score a goal in the first half of the second leg, we have a chance.
Especially after those 4 subs at 80 minutes. You want to gamble by putting an obviosuly not match fit Isak on? Then play him up top through the middle, not wide right and ask him to play like Dirk Kuyt.
