Ultimately the most disappointing thing is we had to go through with a game plan custom made for the unique challenge of PSG away because we don’t have a default approach to lean on. But after putting together such a negative approach, one that left us so little capacity to do anything with the ball once we got it, it was really depressingly bad at stopping them creating chances. I dont think we’d have faired better trying to take them on, but that in itself is an indictment of this season.
This game was not lost here because of the change. But in being forced into it because of how little else is working, and how terribly we executed it, its just another black mark for Slot’s ability to get a tune of them. There is a Rafa version of that game plan that gives us no more than the 30% possession we had but sees them restricted to pot shots from range and with us looking occasionally dangerous on the counter. i disagree with this.
even if you decide to draw paralels to the 2005 run and the way we set about our tasks, this squad and this club are miles away from that type of run.
to just hold your hands up and say ‘we are a bit crap this year, so its not the right time to lay down a marker’ ignores where we stand on the football ladder and investment.
this was basically Slot admitting hes not here next season, trying to…(not even)…win or manage a tie of football, and failing horribly.
no one can say we havent had time to practice that formation, Slots had 18 months to fit alternative formations into his training program.
this was a truely horrible set up, and even if we can see the reasoning in adopting it, it was poorly executed…to ‘park the bus’, you first need players that are so well drilled, disciplined and ready to sweat blood to execute the game plan. we have none of that.
miles away from a ‘Rafa masterstroke’ and pretending it was the ‘only thing we could do’ ignores so many factors.
i inderstand the arguement, but you need Arsenal levels of application to the task for it to be a vable option.

People wants to use the Barcelona come back as an example for hope…You have to remember that we played really well in that 1st leg, it was unfortunate that 3 goals went in (and fortunate too that Dembele missed a sitter to put it completely out of reach…plus the away goal situation could still happen). So the foundation during that tie was good. In the current iteration, although it’s only 2 goals for us to crawl (claw?) back, the foundation is built on quicksand.

We should be able to beat Fulham at home on Saturday. The following week we’re off to Everton for the first Merseyside derby at their new stadium – there’s no chance we’ll win that one; they won’t let us.
