Post Match: Villa v Liverpool (EPL 4/10/20 7.15pm)

trent needs to help more to be fair… most teams are now 100% focusin on that side and its with good reason

If we keep playing as we are whichever poor fucker has to play RCB might as well walk on the pitch with a massive target on their shirt.

With Gk and defence seemingly in shambles at the moment… Need to play. 4-2-3-1 inorder to have 2 mids protecting the defence.

Taki is not good enough competition for Firmino spot.

This is a community that takes solace in putting the fault at the feet of one person, because then we pretend the solution is a quick and easy one. For most of the first half the entire pre-game thread was dominated by calls to get Gomez off, not to save him, but because he was the cause of the problems with his awful display. That’s a far more comfortable narrative than the one where we have a systemic problem that is just presenting itself as Joe having to cover 1/4 of the entire pitch against multiple runners.

Lovren was hooked early because his decisions and actions caused the problems. That was not the case today with Joe.

First goal, I’d liked to have seen him open up more quickly for Adrian, but he is far down the list of people at fault for that goal.

Second goal - tons of blame to go around, and no small amount of credit for Watkins for a great run and finish. Joe did let him inside too easily, but he’s also got reason to expect more help from his CB partner who didnt do remotely enough to get back into position.

Third - not remotely his fault

Fourth - he was not the player who broke the line, nor was he in the area where Watkins scored from

Yet, once we’d conceded the second, ALL the calls were to get him off because he was costing us. There was one moment when he got slated for the chance the Adrian saved at the near post from Barkley. That was a time when he did gamble in trying to play offside and got wrong, and the forum collectively lost its shit on him. But why was Barkley running through from midfield completely untracked? At that point, Joe has a decision to make, to either have to chase back to his own goal yet again, and make up about 10 yards on a player who want his guy, or gamble on playing him off. He gambled and lost, but trying to run him down given the ground he’d have to make up would have been a gamble as well. In the criticism of how he approached that situation there was no consideration for the losing position our midfield continued to put our defense in.

Yeah just seeing that as well. Some pre match chatter it was Trent, who himself was also a fitness questionable to start today.

very true… but I think teams are wising up to the fact that trent is not very good defensively and always leaves acres of space. without hendo or gini to cover that side of the field, it leaves us open…i do feel for joe though, tough day

The way I deal with this is to swap Virgil and Gomez. If the opposition want to attack the spaces Trent leaves, see if they still fancy it with the worlds best defender there.

Doesn’t have to be for the whole game. Just like tonight, when it becomes apparent that this is Villas tactic, just give them something to think about for fifteen minutes or so.

The fact is, Van Dijk, as ace as he is, gets a fucking way ride sometimes because no-one is going to have a go at him and Robbo.

The kit we we’re wearing,a bit fucking ugly isn’t it.

Yeah ok I’m out. " Attack player X’s performance. Just not player Y. He’s my bud".

G’night everyone.

Adrian is a liability. After the first error, there were several times Gomez went to Van Dyke (cut the corner a little) and took extra dribbles, when he normally would have gone back to Allison ( So, you know it’s in his head.
Too many loose passes, from Bobby in particular, but not alone by a long shot.
Gomez’s head was gone. Matip is on the PT table. Maybe another CB wouldn’t go amiss?

My biggest gripe about this game, before this game we still had that air of invulnerability. Sure, we dropped a few at the end of last year, but the title was won, and most people expected a return to dominance, and that looked true after 3 games. This level of defeat is just blood in the water. Think we’ll still win the league, but it’s gonna be a dog fight.

Oh, and really looking forward to more Thiago. He could be a difference maker.

teams started targeting TAA a lot last season and it will continue. like u said in your earlier post, who ever is put at RCB will have a hard time simply because of the space trent leaves

I’ve been saying for a while now that Gomez and Trent play like strangers and on the right and when you have Keita in the mix there’s no help or protection from midfield because he completely abandons his defensive responsibilities. Keita is ok when we’re going forward but gives nothing when teams are breaking down our right.

I didn’t know the seriousness of a shoulder injury could be dependent on whether you are a goalkeeper or not. Interesting horseshit from a gobshite.

I don’t know what conversation you’re participating in. The main argument from me and Mascot, the main two people I see defending Gomez, is that the issues he failed to deal with were not of his making.

And the simple fact that team can choose to attack whoever is playing RCB, or Virgil Fucking Van Fucking Dijk. Obviously whoever is in that position is in for a torrid time.

It’s not an easy position for anyone.

Bit crazy going into the season with 3 CBs of which one gets injured on fresh air and the other has massive brain farts.
Gomez issue is when he starts bad he just gets worse.
Firmino was awful. He got an assist but I bet that’s the only pass he completed to a Lfc player.
TAA - 6 of the 7 goals came down his side. Villa exploited him massively.
Keita - this experiment needs to end. He isn’t good enough. No idea what he’s meant to be doing and neither does he.

This lot were so off it I wonder if they have caught Manes COVID.
I can’t believe a team has 8 players so badly off it in the same 90.

and thats why we give credit to mane and gini on the left and how they track back and cover for robbo. jota did that well…

This is our first crisis since coming back to perch, so Im sure we’ll recover; form is temporary class is permanent and all that. We do need an established CB though, and wont maintain impregnability with Gomez or Fab in there.

Did someone earlier in this thread post about Gazzaniga? I saw Tottenham mentioned but now can’t find it. The bloke that called the Thiago and Jota signing is saying Gazzaniga will be a Liverpool player tomorrow on loan or permanent. Just some fuel for the fire. :beers:
