Post Match: Villa v Liverpool (EPL 4/10/20 7.15pm)

Our club anthem is you’ll never walk alone however as supporters who pour hundreds or in some cases thousands of pounds out of our wallets and into the club every year I don’t think it’s too unreasonable to call a spade a spade and when it’s shit, say it’s shit.

And today was very shit.

Read a post a few up saying near perfect for 24 mo the and whilst I do agree we’ve been on the downward slope of that since around Feb.

A freak result and let’s hope that’s where it ends but fuck me out defending has been woeful lately and with Alisson our for 6 weeks and Adrian dropping a clanger more often than not.

Let’s hope this is the exception rather than the rule but after 4 games we’ve conceded 11.

10 of those from a side just promoted and a side who scrape a relegation fight last season.

I think we were at our absolute peak when Henderson was covering the space the fullbacks vacated.

It’s just not the same with him even more advanced.

Be fascinated to see what Thiago can do there because quite frankly Henderson himself is not even as good as Henderson was there for that period.

Let’s just say the derby’s not the right game to hope it clicks, those gaps need plugging and ideally not by our fullbacks

Maybe Thiago AND Fabinho if Henderson is still not ready.

Be interesting to see how long mane and thiago take to get back…

It feels like most people (myself included) are just counting the 14 day period and neglecting to bring into play that they are in quarantine because they actually HAVE a virus that is causing a global pandemic…

I assume a sportsman at his peak might have some immune defecencies during and post exercise.

Hope I’m wrong.

Really depends how symptomatic they are, if they have no symptoms at all then it should be fine, I would say Thiago should be ok, Mane has had mild symptoms however so who knows with that. Plus Thiago has already been out of it for at least 10 days it could even have been longer.

Agree with the sentiment we’ve been on a downwards trajectory since about February. I felt we might need some more new faces ahead of this season to mix things up a bit to ward off a sense of contentment in the squad. I’m not able to tell why we now seem to defensively shabby, but my impression is it’s the press on the ball in midfield that’s not to the level it used to be combined with our high line.

If the press fails, a high line is suicide. We might need a re-think ahead of the derby. Also with Mane and his pace out the opposition can set their own line a little higher and be more adventurous in their own pressing. I suspect that’s where it all went wrong last night.

And frankly some of our lot really just isn’t good enough, starting with Adrian, Minamino, Gomez, yesterday Trent and Firmino were terrible too, but you’d think that was more a one-off.

The derby will be very interesting. Everton look very solid and we’re suddenly in a mini crisis.

I don’t see Klopp bringing in another keeper but we have to prepare ourselves for letting in quite a few more and maybe losing 1 or 2 while Alisson is out.

Not sure whether international break now is a good thing or not.

Anyways. I’m over this defeat. We were shit from first minute and deserved a fucking good hiding and got one. Villa could’ve had 10 or 12 and we couldn’t complain about it we were that bad. Ok they got 3 deflections but they missed some sitters including 2 before they even scored.

I agree to a point regarding the high line suiting our style, but you also need to consider the alternative players we have, and whilst it looks fantastic when we have Allisson in goal, I don’t believe it suits Adrian at all, so when Adrian is called to cover the big man, the defense need to drop back 5-10 yards to offer Adrian that little but more protection. This is something the coaches and analysts should have picked up after having him in the squad for 12 months already

No Wijnaldum in your list?

Whoever posted about ego, believing your hype & losing the hard work and humility is bang on.

the morning after!!!

If we are to make judgments based on this game, the entire team is a bust. Keita was just as bad as everyone else, bar 2 or 3 who were even worse. The only player that can somewhat hold his head high is Robertson and partly Jota.

Klopp should also start looking into some of his own decisions. No one should come out of this scot free.

I don’t want to point out any specific players to blame for this loss. This was a collective clusterfuck. It looked like the whole team had been out on a pub round the night before. Incredibly unsharp the whole lot. Slow to react, poor first touches, shit passes etc.

Tactically there was some weird issues as well. Extremely high line combined with a keeper that is uncomfortable in playing the sweeper keeper role. I can’t recall a single time when Adrian came out to snuff out a ball over our back line. I don’t really see this as Adrian’s fault though.

I think we need to maintain a balance here. The whole playing squad and the coaching team need to look at themselves now and ask where they have gone wrong. Because we did not just lose, we were humiliated, at least in the scoreline. While the stats showed that we were not totally overran, the scoreline is the only thing that matters at the end of the day and no matter how you look at 7-2, it does not look normal for the defending champion. So Klopp and the coaching team need to take the international break and see whether there are some gaps to fill in regarding strategies and tactics and whether any players’ minds are not in the right place etc and when they are back, to implement those changes because what better match to have after this one than a derby.

But I think we need to hold off the doomsday predictions. We lost a match, we did not lose the season. Losing a match like this does not give anyone the right to extrapolate that we are going to be shit the rest of the season, similarly to how you cannot say you are going to win the league just because you have 12 points from 4 matches. I cannot say Klopp will definitely have the solution but if we cannot trust him that he is going to kick the asses of these players after all that we achieved, I don’t know who else we can trust.

They will watch the tapes, analyse every single decision, and tell those responsible why the vast majority of those decisions were wrong.

Once that process is finished they will move on. We should do the same.

Pretty sure we did step 1 in real time.

On to step 2 then…

in attacking animation Keita was as good as Jota. Niether were good defensively which due to position is a bigger problem for Keita. Fabinho and Wijnaldum were useless in most areas of play. Almso Firmino didn’t put in much defensively either and even if Salah was successful in attack when he came deep he was pretty dire as well. So all in all a dire performance not just on individual levels but collective as well.
Btw we often loose our ‘drive’ when VVD is captain and Wijnaldum marshalls the midfield imo niether are up to it. VVd I reckon because he hasn’t the concentration levels required and Wijnaldum because he hasn’t any anticipation.

Bit of a sickener but I believe in the manager and team to sort it out. We’ll be back soon enough  Beat Everton and it will be all smiles again!

And my personal feeling about last night showed how important balance is in a team rather than just having “world class” players in every position. I think the midfield is overran last night because unlike when Hendo and Gini were in front of Fabinho, you had 2 workhorses who run like shite to be everywhere. Keita is simply not like that, not that he is bad, he is just a different player from Hendo and thus he is not protecting the fullbacks as Hendo and Gini can do. Of course all these are hindsight, but there is a reason why when fit, Gini and Hendo are the first 2 players in the midfield selection. But that is something Klopp has to figure out, Gini and Hendo are going to be here forever.

I am consistently middle-of-the-road dumb.

I have never reached those spectacular heights.

If Alisson has dislocated his shoulder, he could be out for months, not weeks. We need to bring in a keeper and a competent defender. To sell two without one replacement is not good business. Everybody knew Matip can’t string 3 games together without getting injured and then even a minor problem keeps him out for weeks on end.
