Post Match: Villa v Liverpool (FAC 8/1/21 7.45pm)

I think it was Simon Hughes who said he thinks we are holding fire as there is a big chance the season goes on hold for at least a month due to the huge surge in COV19 cases.

If that happens we could have Van Dijk and/or Gomez back, which makes needing a signing not as critical.

If the cases go down and the season looks to be continuing then we could go into the market near the end of the window.

Fgs…I said it would happen, last season we disrespected the cup by fielding a ’ youngsters’ team and now we disrespected the cup cause we put out a full team…just cause Villa couldn’t control their Covid outbreak, we’re being ripped to shreds…people just cannot bear to see us win.

Ripped to shreds by who? I must have missed something.

I think that the venom was spewed by Tony Cascarino. TalkShite pundits, what do you expect really?

That’s a very good point. 2 months of lockdown will do wonders for our starting 11. Keita might even be up to light jogging.

How did we only score 4?

Salah’s fault! Salah out!

Someone actually said we should bench him until he is sold in the pre-match thread.

Lies, damned lies, etc. I remember the last season under BR playing Carlisle in the cup. We were abysmal yet the stats show we had 47 goal attempts. Obviously we were going to be dominant playing a team of kids so the possession stats aren’t a surprise. Prior to Shaqiri’s introduction we didn’t have that many high quality chances. The keeper made a few good saves but nothing you wouldn’t expect him to.

All the problems are at the top end of the pitch at the moment. Either too slow in the build up or we overplay. Front 3 aren’t combining at all. Jota had the element of surprise and was responsible for getting us across the line in a lot of the early games where we didn’t play that well. Thiago will help us create and it’s a real shame Shaqiri can’t stay fit because he’s clever and direct. Always looking for the vertical pass. But we still need to put the ball in the net.

I thought JK was right to put a strong team out because we needed a lift. A nice easy game where we can rack up a few goals and play ourselves into some sort of form. Didn’t really turn out that way and it was embarrassingly bad for the first hour but I’m hoping United will be a good game for us to have next. Clearly something is not right at the moment but we will surely be up for that one

Nah, I’m joking he just needs to change his style more to what he was doing in the second half in this match. I still reckon he’s trying too hard and just needs to simplify it using his partners and fewer touches. He also needs to play through it but Klopp could think of using him more wisely.

We weren’t trying very hard.

Call me patriotic or whatever if you want (because some will think I say this because he is Norwegian no doubt), but I much prefer Jan Åge Fjørtoft’s questioning when it comes to managers than the English tabloid journalists. Jan Åge has a way with people, particularly managers, he manages to ask questions in a way so that they open up and gives much more deeper insight than from the common tabloid journalist. Of course, his contacts helps him, but he really is very good at getting managers to open up and talk more broader than just the normal routine answers. He just disarms people by being jovial while still knowledgeable, which makes them open up in a way they don’t when faced with the far “stiffer” and formal English press.

That having been said, vast majority of Norwegian sports journalists are rubbish.

Thanks on the first point (except for the dig, see below).

Regarding the other bits, I totally accept the difficulties in getting players at the moment, and I acknowledge the club’s long held general approach to transfers of waiting for their preferred target.

However, I do think that sometimes this approach is arguably a touch too purist and undermines us at points when we need to do something in order to see through a possible very important trophy win opportunity.

For all the good stuff, the club hasn’t done everything right over recent years, it isn’t the case that no mistakes were made.

The current centre back situation has resulted from us not addressing in previous windows the fact that three of our centre backs were very injury prone and it took three of them to deliver 50 or 60 centre back appearances a season alongside VVD. It’s been clear for a while that Matip was the main top class centre back after VVD, but also the most injury prone and not a long term regular option for us. Gomez is not Matip’s level, is also injury prone, and we decided to let Lovren go. That left us reliant on VVD continuing to be available most of the time.

Now I can accept us holding off last summer in the middle of the pandemic, especially as the midfield was bolstered and it freed up Fab to cover defence.

But I do think that the current situation warrants a short term fix, as it’s likely that at a minimum we’ll need 15 to 20 centre back appearances in addition to those provided by Fabinho and Matip, and if Williams and Phillips are used for those 15 to 20 appearances, I think it’s likely that the title and PL will be difficult to clinch.

As to players being prepared to move to the UK in the current climate, other clubs aren’t having an issue with that, and whilst I don’t particularly hold England as a country in high regard at the best of times, clearly on the money they’re on and in the bubble they’re in as professional footballers, I don’t think that would be the determining issue. If a player can be persuaded to come and live in hellholes like London, Birmingham or Manchester, let alone other backwaters, I am sure the glorious city of Liverpool and its lovely coastal areas on the Wirral and around the Formby area, would be more than enough.

Final point, one issue from our previous liaisons was your tactic of trying to undermine my arguments in both subtle ways and more direct ones, by way of exaggerating my tone, or putting words in my mouth (posts) that I haven’t used.

For example, “Hopefully you’ll have a better 2021, and Liverpool will give you some cause to post something positive about the club.”, in which you even used your apparent well wishing to have a dig. Not to mention words like furious, blue murder, blame everyone, negligence, sabotage, dereliction.

Let’s be clear, nothing since my return to posting warrants that sort of over-dramatisation and exaggeration, it’s a way of undermining reasoned arguments that differ to yours by portraying differing views as hysterical, when in fact the hysteria is actually in the shouting down and undermining of views.

The difference between us, is that I respect and accept that you have the right to your view, and attempt to engage in a healthy debate that is not personal, nor which seeks to dominate, undermine or shout you down.

If you’ve long held personal issues with me that’s for you, personally I just want to spend time reading and discussing LFC issues with people who share my love of the club, even if we’re not people who share interests or similar views beyond the club.

The Premier League season is due to end on May 23, 2021, 19 days before the rescheduled Euro 2020 kicks off. So, unless Euro 2020 is delayed or cancelled, it won’t be possible to extend the Premier League season for much more than a week, if that, to compensate for any temporary shut down.

Consequently, we won’t have any additional time to get Virgil or Joe back.

The priority for the FA, and probably all FAs, including UEFA, will be the Euros, due to the money involved, and their clear prioritisation of international matches over club football.

During this pandemic all international football should have been suspended until the pandemic was over. It has been utter madness to add additional travel and player mixing outside of club bubbles.

Football clubs are independent businesses that need to survive financially, they are of huge importance to their local communities, and they provide collectively thousands of jobs.

Club football should always have come first and foremost.

My view is that if the season is suspended, if it restarts they’ll either cram the matches into the remaining weeks, or curtail it by 23rd May latest in order to not impact on the Euros, and award it based on the standing at that point (probably points per game).

And I fully expect they will call it when one of their favoured Manchester or London clubs is in a winning position on that basis.

The only way for LFC to guarantee the title, is to ensure we remain in that position all the time, if at all possible.

Mate, at some point, I’d love to have a chat with you about how fucking boss this side is and what our phenomenal lads have achieved over the last few years.

But it seems that all you post is proclamations of how and why we’re going to fail, that we need to do this and that or we can forget that and this.

I hate to do this to you, but Three years ago you were adamant if we didn’t sign something we would qualify for the champions league. We did, and reached the final. Then you said we wouldn’t qualify for the CL again if we didn’t sign a Coutinho replacement. We won it. Then before last season you declared we would fall back into the pack if we saw out the summer our without a major signing. We won the league. You’ve not got a great track record when it comes to these doom scenarios.

I agree with you that we need a Centre Back. I’m unsure whether I think we should seek a proper belter or a stop gap to get us through to the end of the season. But we could do with someone. I understand that.

But I am sure (and Klopp has actually said as much) that the best efforts are being made to bring in sone cover. There are lots of reasons why we might struggle, from finances, lack of availability, depressed market etc.

But I have no reason to think that the club would sabotage our success by just not being arsed to do something. The have demonstrated their Competence and earned our trust.

It was no dig by the way. I mean it genuinely. If you’ve had a shit year I hope the club can give you something to celebrate.

Also, in what way does it help the club for Klopp to sit in press conferences saying ‘yeah, we’re properly fucked if we don’t get a centre back’.

That destroys any young lad we need to throw in and adds another £10m to the price, just to reassure fans we’re trying to sort it.

Klopp has to acknowledge the issue while creating the impression that they are happy to muddle through if necessary.

Maybe we could give them the benefit of the doubt.
