Pre Match. CL Group Stage Match One. Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid. Wednesday 9th September 20.00hrs

Oof, this one will be ugly, as always against this lot. I’ll still watch it, as I’m eager to see how our lads cope with adversity, and there will be lots of it tomorrow night! A good chance to see how our lads progress under Iraola in terms of mentality. This one will be as tough as they come. The ref will play a role as well. Hopefully he’ll stay strong against their shithousery.

But our lads will have the Anfield crowd to back them. A European night under the limelights again… looking forward to it!

You would take out our most inform player for a player who is half fit?

The 2 times he got the ball against Ipswich he looked spritly.
Only way to get him to sharpness is by playing. Then again for Gakpo, one of our in form players of the moment is quite bold.

This would be good if BB is deemed fit enough:

Obvs VVD LCB

Hes played 10 mins since the World Cup.
If youre gonna start him then put Gakpo on the right - dont drop him.

Rio at the moment is a last 10-15 minutes player.
He isnt ready yet and thats fine as we are stacked on the left.

Same team as started at Ipswich…

I think that’s what we’ll get, but I would be tempted to play a three man midfield of Szob, Macca and Grav, with Wirtz on the bench. If he is going to struggle with the physicality of Ipswich, I’m not sure playing these thugs is really for him.

…yeah I chose the same starting 11…
simply as a sort of ‘pat-on-the-back’ from Iraola - a sort of here is your reward and same again… for the two goals we scored were in the first 10mins of the game…
If the game becomes a type of trench warfare with hand to hand fighting, then yes, get Wirtz out of there asap..

I mentioned Rio in reference to last year. Perhaps he’ll get a loan in January?

The only thug left in this Atletico team is Giuliano Simeone. I don’t think the whole shithouse label thing fit them anymore, and hasn’t for a few years.

This was their front six against Athletic at the weekend:

Hjulmand and Barrios in midfield, Simeone and Lookman on the flanks, Baena and Lee up front.

It’s not Everton this, or Burnley under Dyche. It’s a team with good footballers who want to play football.

Anyway, CL is back. Love it, can’t wait.

I haven’t much faith in Gravenberch atm so getting another good look at him wouldn’t be at all bad.
Who would you play at 10, Macca?

I hope you’re correct :slightly_smiling_face:.

There’s no right or wrong, only opinion :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: :+1:

I’ll be back to you after the match on my opinion.
ATM my opinion is favourable towards Athletico.

The fish rots from the head…a bad apple spoils the entire barrell…any club with Diego Simeone in charge will take on his character. Yes they have more technicians but Simeone demands a very Argentine brand of “streetwise” football. That will remain as long as he is in charge.

listening to macca pre-conference, looks like we def getting a midfielder in january
