There’s nothing I saw from the just concluded Leeds vs Sunderland game that should overly concern us - at least the switched on version of us. Leeds look limited, a bit tired and will have had a day less to recover. Beyond breaks and set pieces, yeah I know, we should be able to get it done and start the new year positively.
Surely can’t be just be me in thinking this has been the most sedate of Festive Season fixture lists in recent memory. Genuinely thought we would having been playing on Tuesday.
I saw a team that plays with much more pace and intensity than we do. A team that piles forward in numbers and has 5 or 6 men in the box when attacking.
I saw a team who’s CF has scored in the last 6 PL games and a team that put 3 past us in 20 minutes a couple of weeks ago.
Under-estimating these would be a bad mistake.
That said I expect us to beat them providing we don’t hand them any late Christmas presents. They leave themselves open at the back as we saw at Elland Road and if we take the chances we will undoubtably create then we should win.
I think Chiesa will find himself back on the bench with Frimpong taking his place and Bradley at RB. Maybe Robbo for Kerkez who looked fucked at the end yesterday.
Gakpo will probably come straight back in and I’d like to see Mac dropped to give us a MF 3 of Szoboslai, Grav and Wirtz.
At least we have options.
Luckily Konate didn’t get booked against Wolves, because he would’ve been suspended here (I guess we would’ve dropped Gravenberch to RCB in that case). It’s all reset after Leeds as we head into 2026.
Some decisions to make here, as Szobo will surely come back in and Chiesa probably back to the bench. We’ll see who starts at full back and if both Jones and Mac remain where they were from the start.
I personally wouldn’t start Gakpo straight away after only a brief cameo.
Another game for Wirtz to shine, he needs to extend his run of goals/assists and is linking up with Kerkez much better than Gakpo…
Szobo is back, so we’re winning this one to make it 4 in a row.
