That would have been a soft penalty.
I mean it was soft, but there was contact, wasn’t this VAR thing supposed to only come into play when it’s a clear wrong decision?

Really confusing as there was no contact on the ball, only the player? Also the var footage on the tv showed just a blank green third of the pitch with no action whatsoever? Is this the new reality view for folks watching at home then?
I know it was soft but it was overturned because they re-litigated the decision. There was no obvious reason for the intervention.
That unfortunately should draw a line under any suggestion of Gomez’ ongoing usefulness. He was doing fine but what is the point if no one is surprised that you can only last 20 mins
