On the booing, I was unsure and uncertain before the game, but watching it on TV here in the States made me very proud.
Everyone will have their own reasons, but the fact is the city of Liverpool has suffered more than most at the hands of government over the years. Then narrowing it to the football, successive governments have denied justice for the 97. Then in the midst of a cost of living crisis, and food banks becoming a necessity for many thousands of families, seeing all the wealth and pomp and ceremony, not to mention the 100M cost, just seemed massively misplaced.
My 19 year old daughter was watching with me, and she loved the booing. She spent a few months in the UK last year with my family, and went to Liverpool most days, and came to love the city and its people. She thought the protest was marvelous, and contrasted it to here, noting how civilized it was that people could express their feelings about something, clearly and healthily, without fear of reprisal.
Anyway, back to the footy…
