Pre Match - Liverpool vs Burnley | 17/01/2026 - 15:00 GMT | PL MD 22

Back to the League grindstone and an Anfield kickoff at 3pm. Old school!

Burnley are in pretty miserable form so this is one that we would be expected to win.

Mo Salah will still be at AFCON as he has a 3rd place playoff on Saturday.

Match officials:
Referee: Andy Madley.
Assistants: Lee Betts, Marc Perry.
Fourth official: Adam Herczeg.
VAR: Michael Salisbury.
Assistant VAR: Dan Robathan.

I may miss this one as I am away this weekend and I have no idea if our chalet has interweb access.

Most important match of the season!
I’d like us to keep a clean sheet and show some attacking prowess.

I’m sure that Arne and his team will know the personnel, formation and tactics to see us through this game. COYR YNWA :+1:

Number 19 in the Premier League, we have some striker problems, but we should win this by four goals.

Game at their place was as one-sided as you’ll ever see but it still took an injury time penalty to break them.
I expect Saturday to be the same, but don’t see them being able to keep us out so easily. 2-0 to the Reds is my prediction.

I’m pushing it but I reckon 3-1 with Hugo and Flo both on the scoresheet and an assist for Flo too. Gakkers or Dom with the other. Still think we are about the turn the corner.

Misheard and mistyped details of the press conference:

  • Robbo contract: Slot compliments him as a mature player. Professional behaviour.
  • Salah coming back, keeping him happy: Plays Egypt Saturday and then back to us. Happy to see him back after Saturday.
  • 11 games unbeaten: Needs to be 11 wins in a row. Much better place since PSV game.
  • Champions League qualification: Not in an ideal position at the moment and competing with other sides for 4th slot. Failure to qualify has big financial impact.
  • Burnley assessment: Had lots of chances but they made it hard and we needed a penalty. Want to show better at home. We have been working on set piece this week. If we create more we are more open and need to deal with counter.
  • Balance: we have had less chances against us in recent games. Players are growing in belief and getting fitter.
  • Assessment of what can be achieved: Need to constantly improve. Margins against top teams are small. Sometimes you need luck. Single referee decisions can influence games.
  • When is Mo available? Next week back. Will have talks regarding games.
  • Injuries: Leoni, Bradley, Isak out. Others available.
  • Question about Hungarian players? Dom had brainfart but others play OK.
  • Kerkez? Players find out today regarding starting LB.
  • (Couldn’t hear question) Set pieces? Need to concede fewer counter-attacks when playing a low block. Work on details.
  • Discussions with Mo are private.
  • Ramsey: In a great position at the moment. Big chance at the moment in the first team. Slot still feels he has better options at RB.
  • Bradley injury / transfers: Club are aligned on what issues are.
  • Small details / players in box: Need more crosses. Will always be outnumbered in opposition box. If crosses are not coming in then forwards will try to get involved.

TLDR: Game of small margins. Quad fit aside from long term injuries. We play Burnley 3pm tomorrow.

I don’t get this ‘getting fitter’ bit. Might as well say they’re getting fatter!

He says it pretty much every week. And then we see players who are pooped after 60 minutes of walking about.

Yep and in any case fitness should have been assessed and developed during pre season. It’s far too late now.
If he means match fitness then sure due to his lack of rotation those that sit on the bench are never going to be ‘match’ fit. Just look at Endo if he gets 5 minutes noone should claim he’s not a capable substitute as there’s noway he can be match fit.

Moan about his comments and then set overly ambitious targets such as winning by 4 goals, we haven’t beaten anyone by 4 goals and don’t look like doing so.

No wonder its such a let down.

F*ck me, that Hungarian journalist is seriously annoying with his questions. I know language with them can be a big barrier, but still, you should find someone competent.

He gets regular opportunities for questions and I understand basically all he wants to talk about is Liverpool’s Hungarian players. That’s his job, why he’s there every time. But then goes on to ask total stupid, childish stuff like:

  • Did you talk to Dom after his mistake? I’d ask him back what do you think?
  • After playing tremendous against Arsenal and resting against Barnsley, will you put Kerkez in the starting XI?
  • Will you opt for Kerkez or Robertson in the starting XI, since you said Robertson needs to play a lot of games? He didn’t understand Slot in another question said Robertson already played quite a number of games, not that he needs to play a lot of games.

What a waste of time.

I remember it was similar when a few Croatian players (Pletikosa, Corluka, Modric and Kranjcar) were at Tottenham and suddenly we always had a Croatian journalist at press-conferences. It was called Crottenham. Often asking some similarly stupid questions, just to fill void and because we’re a small but proud country, we have to know the count every fart they had during the week.

No wonder head coaches get exhausted giving who knows what amount of interviews. For the level of interest the public has in the game, you’d expect over time better questions as well, at least from some part (I know a lot of it is simply directed to them). It’s not the worst really, because you get uglier stuff. But I bet this can really drain energy in the long term.

Will be interesting what we go for tomorrow, especially between the lines.

Assuming that Frimpong starts at RB (we’ll see if he makes that position his own mostly from now on until the end of the season).

We had different combinations there in last weeks and months. Sometimes two wingers, sometimes one winger and one extra attacking midfielder off the sides, sometimes without wingers. Mac playing deeper or higher, Jones playing deeper or higher.

Since it’s Burnley at home and they will likely continue with 5 at the back (we showed certain struggles in a few recent games against that), also with their recent connection, I could see Wirtz behind Ekitike and Szobo probably on the right to offer balance.

Frankfurt! :face_blowing_a_kiss:

Slower more like.

Another big struggle where we scrape a 2-1 win.

Definitely Frimpong at RB, or is that a best guess? I could see him and Szoboszlai being quite fluid on the right.
