I have a Bayern Munich 1981 vibe ahead of this. European Cup semi-final, we weren’t expected to win and we’d had a relatively poor season, i.e we hadn’t won the league(!), and yet we came away with 1-1 which got us through on away goals as the home leg was 0-0.
This bunch of players seems to raise themselves for the big games, until they go behind that is, so I have feeling they can get something from this tie. Then again, I had that feeling before the City game!
It is never a good thing to get beaten like we did at the weekend, neither is it a good thing going out of the FA cup when silverware is becoming scarce, but it might just work in our favour if it galvanises these players of ours to realise it is Budapest or broke, as far as this season is concerned.
The squad is disjointed, our pattern of play is non-existent, the players are struggling to find inspiration from the sidelines during open play… we are in a mess. Yet we have some of the most talented players we can call upon… that doesn’t vanish over night…! We will have thousands of die-hard supporters giving it their all in a very hostile environment… We are LFC.
No doubt our confidence is low at present, but if we can keep it compact for as long as possible, stranger things have happened in a game such as this. Even if we get breeched once or twice during the game, it goes without saying, we have to remain positive and don’t fold like a cheap tent. We can beat these fuckers if we turn up with a good mindset. Who cares how much we get put through the wringer during the game - we can beat these pretenders over two games… COYR
I’m go to get excited now. For a short time at least, something amazing is still possible this season. Bring it on. Paris aren’t all that. Time to support the team.
I don’t think so. This team is capable, but is lost and fragile. It just isn’t capable of going through enough games against enough quality opposition without hitting a patch that critically undermines their confidence in themselves and each other. These are criticisms that are typically made about soft teams and ones who dont care, but I think our issue is more that we’re emotionally damaged.
I dont know I have ever been as apprehensive about a game as I have of this one. It isnt just the prospect of a proper pantsing, but how much further that may push us into toxicty that becomes that much harder to get out of next season.
I said it the other day. I feel better about this one than I feel about Fulham, for the simple reason that I think the players actually give a fuck about this.
Fulham is actually more important, there’s not a hope today like there wasn’t against City. The only thing left this season is to try not to compromise the next one.
My attitude all season has tried to be this is a hobby and you need to find things to enjoy. In that spirit, here is what I’m looking for tonight.
a display of old school shithousery. I want to see if we have that in us. Let’s see if we can stop a game of football happening, like we’ve been on the of.
the players need to go into this with the mentality that PSG are going to score. At some point the ball will hit the back of the net, and that’s OK. It does not need to be the end of the world. Taking these back to Anfield a goal down is absolutely fine. No-one should be giving up at the first goal.
a few players playing as if they actually care about being embarrassed in a big European tie the world will be watch. And I want them to play like underdogs, backs to the wall and scrapping like fuck five minutes at a time.
So no more fucking gallows humour. No more defeatism. It’s a European cup quarter final. Let’s give this a proper go.
Marmadashvili
Frimpong Konate Van Dijk Kerkez
Gravenberch Szoboszlai
Jones Mac Allister
————-Wirtz
Ekitike————
This would be my team. Packed midfield, narrow shape, width from the full backs and Wirtz just off Ekitike.
It won’t be Slot’s team, and I suspect there will be tonnes of Salah and Gakpo in this. I just think both of those are better bench options at the minute.
Very good post. I don’t personally think Slot should remain, but I really want the lads to show some serious balls tonight and not bottle it (and win obviously) . The bit about PSG scoring is very true. It WILL happen, at least once. But I hope the mentality monsters can return for this tie.
