I think Macca and Jones really interchanged well with who played the deeper role quite a lot of times… It’s almost like Macca at the deeper role when Aston villa were defending and Jones slotting there when they were attacking.
I still think Macca is our best player for the deep role. I expect Gravenberch will be used further forward. Macca can be a 6 or an 8 depending on the game.
Commentator Jim Beglin also said same, which is a FUNDAMENTAL misunderstanding of the game.
This was about control. Controlled possession with Macca at the absolute center of it. Only thing missing from his performance was the mis hit looping balls over the top to spring that Villa high line…
Beglin described it as almost casual, which I thought was hilarious.
This was two managers in a cat and mouse; the Spaniard setting traps and waiting to spring the counter.
JK on the other hand using Macca in the deep role to control the game and determine the time and place to break forward… And using late runners from MF to diversify the attack and keep the Villa defence on its toes…
A very enjoyable tactical game…
I saw it on tik tok think the idiot is an Arsenal fan.
Joe Allen-ish.
A word for Andy Robertson by the way. Thought this was an excellent performance, much more disciplined and made a lot of small contributions.
Only for the quiet bit I hope. Joe wasn’t quite upto scratch as far as effectiveness goes at this level
