Being Cody: The Gakpo Memoirs
Less of that Bekkers
Codders. If bekloppt would have his say
Since I don’t have a clue about cricket either, I still don’t get it; I’m sorry, but I absolutely cannot fathom what is supposed to be so bad about it.
Some one called Nathan is nicknamed Gary.
I blame @aussielad and his ilk for that.
What I find truly awful is calling Andoni “Donnie”; to me, a Donnie is a sleazy Italian with pomade in his hair and checkered trousers with suspenders.
I absolutely agree, then; there are good nicknames and not-so-good ones. You can also take it too far.
This will cheer you up Livvy:

Okay
, but that fits even less now imo
Nicknames are overly common in Liverpool, it’s the way it has been for decades. Sometimes a nickname has nothing to do with the persons actual name… as in being called The Ghost (because they are always moaning), or The Snipers Nightmare (because the guy had one leg shorter than the other and his head ‘bobbed’ from side to side as he walked) or naming someone Texas (because they were full of Bullshit) or in school days, an unfortunate someone in every class, was given the moniker Silver Sleeves… etc etc
Then there was the nicknames dished out because of your name. Murphy was always called Spud, Smith was usually called Smigger, Hughes was always Yozzer and so on…
As for Gakpo, being labelled as Gakkers, I can only put my personal take on it, and that is, it is neither humorous nor a long standing acknowledgement of that surname… to me it sounds a tad infantile, as school playground level…
The thing is, if it’s neither harmful nor distasteful, what does it matter what he gets called, as we all know who it refers to, and soon enough it looks like a ready made headline and not our problem anymore… as in
“Gakkers Signs For Spurs” :0)
I have a longstanding, and I think justified, antipathy towards nicknames longer than the person’s actual name.
I had Hursty at school and Dwayne Dwibbly due to the bowl cut I had.
I hope all the people who called me the latter are now bald. Anyhow how have Newcastle been getting on this pre season?
Inventive ![]()
There was a kid at school called Wood. His nickname was Splinter. Could have been worse. There was another skinny lad they called Spindle. Always liked that one.
And his assistant an ‘ass’.
So you don’t want to be called ‘Kingsford Smith’ on here? But ‘kingo’ or ‘smudge’ would be okay? ![]()
You fuck this up and I’m starting a petition, 7 day mod ban for anything other than a win.
I had a mate at school whose surname was Pepper. Nickname, Pepsi.
All this Bradders and Gakkers stuff though just doesn’t sound very scouse, or even northern. They sound like they’re from southern England, and also sound a bit middle class. I can imagine a cricket or a rugby player having a nickname like that.
Anyway, as for the suggested line-ups, why is everyone including Jacquet? He’s only played 45 minutes in one preseason game and was being nursed through training because of his injury. Whereas Araujo has had a complete preseason with us and Barca.
Ah ..no wonder, many girls called me The Suave which I thought strange because it made no reference to my artistic flair
Yeah, it sounds like something Henry Blofeld would say, but that’s what makes it funny in my opinion. It’s so totally wrong that it’s humorous. I didn’t invent it, but a mate of mine used to shout it out in the pub whenever Cody got the ball and it made us laugh. I never thought I’d be discussing it on the internet. I wouldn’t dream of adding -ers to any other of our players names by the way.
I remember a guy coming from India or Pakistan and joining our school late in the term when most of the cliques and small groups had already been established… Anyway, his proper name was Atteeq… and in a school that took absolutely no prisoners, and him being an outsider anyway, he got named ‘Lofty’ within the hour (as in attic), and it stuck with him for the next 4 or 5yrs…
Still wonder whether the nickname followed him on to Uni.. :0)
There was a boy at my primary school who had gone by Joe all the way through until he came back in for the first day of our last year when he said he was now going to use his full name of Joseph.
All became clear when the teacher called the register - turns out his mum had got remarried over the summer holidays and their new surname was King.
As you can imagine, Joe’s, sorry Joseph’s request was handled respectfully by the whole class.
