I can’t remember when I last looked forward to one of our matches. Under Klopp, it was every match because we always went for the win. Of course, it didn’t always work out, but the intention was there.
Slot, who plays not to lose rather than to win, has completely sapped that enthusiasm with his boring football.
I can’t wait for him to leave and for us to have a proper manager again, one who isn’t afraid of losing his job.
For me, the only little question here would be who we start at RB.
Ideally, I’d like us to go with Salah, Szobo and Wirtz between the lines, behind Ekitike. Again, would be tempted to start Jones over Mac in deeper midfield.
At RB, either Gomez but I understand it could be again one of Szobo/Jones (and protecting Gomez for CB needs). With Gomez at RB, you could allow Kerkez to push higher and wider to allow Wirtz inside to create the box shape midfield.
Jones was great at right back against Brighton, and using him there allowed Szobo to boss our midfield again. I wouldn’t be against continuing that experiment.
I’m not convinced yet by a midfield that has Szobo that deep. We didn’t see it a lot of times. It might be something for the future, but right now I prefer him when he can show his dynamism and there’s enough protection behind. His numbers are better than ever this season, so he can add to that and with players like Salah, Wirtz and Ekitike around, his pressing is important in that mixture.
I’m going for a Liverpool win. We have been playing a bit better, and what we need to do is coming into sharp focus as Chelsea and Man Utd have both edged ahead of us in the race for the CL spots. I’m backing us to get the points we need to qualify.
Like everyone else, I see a question mark at right back. My guess is Jones will play there, both to keep Gomez as the back up centre back in case something happens there, and also to get Szobo - who is in great form and scoring goals too - higher up the pitch.
I would have Gomez at RB. Konate, VVD and Kerkez.
Jones, Gravenberch and Szoboszlai as the three.
Wirtz slightly left, Salah right and Ekitike central.
MacAllister, Gakpo off the bench. If Gomez needs a rest, move Jones back, bring MacAllister in.
