Hopefully anyway.

The Queen’s funeral will be held next week, expected to be on Monday, September 19.

The Telegraph‘s Ben Rumsby has statedthat there “are major concerns about football fixtures taking place” over that weekend due to the “likelihood of police being redeployed” to London.

That could then leave a shortage for Premier League fixtures, news which is corroborated by inews, with stretched resources to play a role in the decision rather than a mark of respect like this weekend.

The hope is that an announcement will be made swiftly for all concerned.

If it was to be postponed, it would mean no Premier League action until October 1 for Liverpool, when Brighton travel to Anfield after the international break.

But it would also mean that the Premier League have to find two free slots for these postponed games and the schedule is already tight as it is, with only five free midweeks before the final weekend.

That’s if we go all the way in all 3 cups and I wouldn’t much bet on it. And even then it’s still 5 free weeks and 2 games.

In fact if we do make all three finals and win them I’ll be delighted. There is also some free weeks in the CL when they spread the last 16 over four weeks if we were to qualify that is.

Doesn’t much work for Chelsea but Wolves would be good.

Thinking back to why the FA moved quick to cancel, the government gave rather vague advice on Covid and it led to some poor decisions.

Football also got a kicking from it and I wonder if that’s why the FA went hard on this.

I think they probably should have realised that the Golf would look to go ahead once the government said they had no objections but they probably felt we would get good publicity. They probably would have if it was the more high profile divisions but the ban at lower levels has made a bit of a mockery of it.

Though a fan base chanting obscenities at each other for 90 mins isn’t coming Together in the Queens memory whatever some blow hards want to pretend on Twitter.

Golf already feels like a funeral, people stood around quietly watching someone putting something in a hole in the ground and then after what seems like too long a time you can all go off and have a drink.

"There is no obligation to cancel or postpone events and sporting fixtures, or close entertainment venues during the National Mourning period. This is at the discretion of individual organisations.

"As a mark of respect, organisations might wish to consider cancelling or postponing events or closing venues on the day of the State Funeral. They are under no obligation to do so and this is entirely at the discretion of individual organisations.

“If sporting fixtures or events are planned for the day of the State Funeral, organisations may want to adjust the event timings so they do not clash with the timings of the funeral service and associated processions. As a mark of respect, and in keeping with the tone of National Mourning, organisers may wish to hold a period of silence and/or play the National Anthem at the start of events or sporting fixtures, and players may wish to wear black armbands.”

That’s the official guidance. If the Prem wanted to postpone, would make more sense to have postponed next weekend’s fixtures rather than this weekend.

As it is, they’ll probably also postponse next weekend as well. They should’ve went ahead this weekend, and have a minute applause. The West Ham game showed how the mark of respect would mostly be done.

Yes, there will be some idiots, but idiots will always be idiots.

I wasn’t aware they shouted get in the hole at funerals.

There is an embargo on all top level league games on CL fixture dates. UEFA can give approval to allow a game to be rescheduled on CL date under special circumstances, but they tend to allow it at the end of the season when alternatives are verging on non-existent

They don’t allow them to kick off at the same time.

France Ligue Un ran a top flight game at 6pm last week. There are alternatives and still 3 midweeks free even without the 2 pencilled in.

Edit, i was wondering why Liverpool and Celtic was trending on Twitter and i had to learn that the FA postponed the games this weekend because they were afraid of the fans booing the anthem etc.

Well…

As I wrote elsewhere if you believe that then you will believe anything.

Face saving after the complete condemnation, it will demonstrate as much on Tuesday where I bet it passes with minimum fuss.

They had a number of options:
Split between professional and amateur
Split between the leagues
Split between non league and league
Allow any under 18s football

Not only did they cancel all football, they also said insurance wouldn’t cover any training. They’ve blanket banned it and then tried to shift the blame on the fans, if your a football fan you’ll condemn this as harshly as you condemned the idea, but they won’t as everything is club blinded.

The media got the wrong end of the stick with the FA Cup final. The booing was aimed at the government, and the ineffective and uncaring establishment. Not at the Queen.

Now that the Queen has died, I would expect our fans to respectfully observe a moment just as well as any other set of fans.

Honestly, I don’t know what to believe. I absolutely understand that they don’t want to embarrass themself internationally these days because some fans can’t control themselves and sing “Lizzy is in the box and some other shit” in the stadium and the whole world is listening, completely apart from the booing.

(happened in Irland btw)

Yeah, we will see Tuesday how well it is followed, I expect the vast majority not to make a pillock of themselves.

The FA are probably hoping for an all out insurrection during the minute silence, anything else and they will look even more foolish than now.

If you go off what the FA actually is briefing out to sources then you can’t bring football back til after the funeral, though UEFA won’t stop their games.

The funeral will be on Monday
