Premier League 2022/23 (Part 1)

I wonder will it we see another Arteta video release on how they nearly won the title.

You can take the boy out of Everton…

Arsenal’s woes seem to be on the defensive side. They’ve been reasonably tidy until these last three matches. 7 goals allowed. Shocking that Soton got 3 past them. I don’t see any key injuries that could be causing it. Just a dip in form, eh?

Saliba.

Thanks to you both. I obviously don’t follow Arsenal too closely. Wonder if Saliba is that good or his Rob Holding just that bad. Always thought Holding was pretty good. Still, shipping 3 to Soton. That’s a horrid marker.

Feel Fulham will score soon.

Both are true. Saliba is arguably the best young CB in the world and Holding is terrible.

Fine goal by Wilson.

Leeds are going down.

Not sure what Meslier’s doing these last few games.

Bit naughty by Rodrigo that.

Never been massively impressed to be honest.

Highlights type goalie.

Christ Leeds are bad.

What is Meslier doing.

Both. Saliba is excellent. He has that prime Van Dijk like presence that makes teams turn around rather than try to attack where he is. Holding is a comedy footballer but the issue appears to be not just his presence to create Maguire like fuck ups, but that Saliba’s absence has made Gabriel fall apart. He’s made more mistakes the last month than he had done all season before.

Yeah, too glib. This Arsenal dip is more of a team failing.

V. Liverpool. (probably, Holding’s worst match).
Goal 1. Jones one v. one with Holding. Passes to Jota who crosses to Salah. Holding certainly does nothing special on that play, but he also has a lot to do against two talented players.
Penalty. His poor tackle awarded a penalty which Salah missed.
Goal 2. Plays no role. Actually, he’s tight to Gapko, exactly where he should be.

V. WHU
Goal 1. Gabriel Jesus tackle for a penalty. Nothing to do with Holding.
Goal 2. Ball over the top to Bowen. Not even Holding’s side of the pitch. Nothing to do with Holding.

V. Soton
Goal 1. Ramsdale pass intercepted. Nothing to do with Holding.
Goal 2. Arsenal lose possession in midfield. Nothing to do with Holding.
Goal 3. Armel Bella-Kotchap beats Holding to a header on the corner, leading to the goal.

That was ripe for a punching save rather than a flap.

For the Wilson goal Meslier palmed it to Harry as well.

Arsenal’s success up until now was in large down to their ability to name a very settled side. That was important because even people who were buying them being a good side who deserved to be top believed they’d struggle if they picked up injuries because behind that first 13 or so players their squad was poor. Unfortunately for them, right at the business end of the season they lost one of the players they had the least capacity to do without.
