I’ve never felt wretched under Klopp, even if we did miss out. In terms of wretchedness this season is hovering around Hodgson/Rodgers level not least because of the media presence that Slot has erred with.
Five points from here on would put us on 63 points, a miserable tally. You have to go back to the 14/15 and 15/16 seasons to see worse ones (62 and 60).
Pickford’s challenge looks even worse from that angle. Nobody will convince me that is not a penalty and a red card. He was dangerously out of control.
End of the day we may be lucky to get a CL place in comparison but all teams face that scenario this season hence why it might be enough for 5th place.
What I don’t get is why no one leaves one back on him, if I’m Taty there I’ve made a mental note of that and at the next corner we have I’m giving you a nice little Joey Barton esque knee in the back of your calf.
To be honest, 2020/21 felt like a curse to me but 2022/23 was one of the seasons that made me feel the worst as a Liverpool fan. I think the drubbing of Man United at home was the only positive thing that happened for the whole season. When it comes to this one, the only positive that might happen would be CL qualification.
2020/21 was a side that was clearly still very good, had got itself top by Christmas despite having already suffered some huge injury absences but reached a point in the winter where the injury absences were just too deep. But during that period we still knew who were as a team and we knew the light at the end of the tunnel was simply a return to a normal injury list rather than the absurd one we had been dealing with. And that is what happened. Outside of that run of 6 defeats in 7 games at the peak of the injury crisis we were in championship form for the 30 games either side of it.
The 2022-23 we largely had the players to call upon the manager wanted they were just collectively no longer able to do what was required of them. It was a season left real questions about how we got to that point and whether Klopp still had it, and what was next for this side.
Even despite the injuries this season is far closer to that one than 20/21 because of how infrequently we’ve looked like we were up to the required level even when our best players were largely available
There were lots of back and forths over where the City Palace game would fit, but it looks like that has been finalized now with City’s proposal rejected.
Note our Villa game is provisionally on the Sunday but will be brought forward to friday if Villa reach the Euro final the following Wed to give Villa an extra 2 days recovery before the final
For the next 3 games, I think 5 points W vs ManU, D vs Chelsea and D vs Villa would put us as strong favorites for 3rd. a W vs either Chelsea or VIlla and D vs the other and Manu would guarantee 4th.
4 points would have us a toss up between 4th and 5th.
That is not factoring in the final day game against Brentford, Manu face Brighton, Villa face City so a strong chance of final day dramas which could see a number of online tantrums and meltdowns.
I think the dynamic is a bit different. After the trials and tribulations of this year, one would hope that they want to finish as strongly as possible. Also how much of last year was more a struggle to knit the new style together than taking the foot off the pedal. If the group does take the foot off the pedal then we are completely lost (players and coach) and likely looking at similar struggles next year,
December and January in particular we were flying. Things became problematic from around February which is when performances dropped off. We were still picking up points but it was looking much more of a struggle and that is the period in which Arne argued to Hughes et al that our way of playing had been found out and needed changing.
It’s not going to work. To get to where these owners are content with that they wouldn’t even give the possibility of a sacking a second look, doesn’t require you to be good, just less shit than a couple of others…and with the league essentially buying an extra CL spot, makes that feat a little bit easier.
I don’t know if its changed, but historically CL broadcast money is weighted based on league finish. So for a given amount of money to be allocated to the English teams, more gets given to the 2nd placed finisher than 3rd and so on. And it’s not an insignificant difference either
Prize money wise its not too different, not sure we’ve been off television anymore than we have in the past this season, also with the increase in live games I doubt thats dropped off.
