This is not that different from the NCAA basketball bracket. If a #16 beats a #1, they don’t get fed to the #2 in the next round - they face what was supposed to be the weakest seed in the next round (winner of #8/#9).
The league split into qualified and playoffs. 9th-24th had a playoff. UEFA drew this round of games based on league position in group rather than who qualified.
I posted in the Champions League thread what the actual draw should have been. They made their own structure a farce in year one.
While I generally agree, I would call it more last ditch defending.

PSG are a very good team. They made some big signings in Kvark, Neves, Muani and Barcola. Was expecting this but glad we withstood the storm. As game goes by they will become desperate and make mistakes as the return leg is at Anfield.

Dom is usually pressing high up the pitch, but today he’s been instructed to back off and be an extra body a little further back. We are allowing PSG defenders to have the ball at the back.
Yet this is actually not helping to be solid in the middle.
That’s true I suppose you could see it as one big KO round that fed into the proper tournament but UEFA presented that as a seperate stage. The whole point of being the 1 seed is that you play against the lowest seed first - instead UEFA had the additional playoff round which put seeds through whonwere lower than #16 and then didn’t re-seed fornthe main tournament. Plus they for some reason made it 15th or 16th just to make sure there was no clarity earlier.
I’m not actually annoyed at playing PSG. We’ve beaten better teams than them, I just hate poor structure and everything UEFA does is fucking rubbish.
