I’ve asked the other mods to take action on this. I believe that Jon’s comments here are racist, and that should be acted upon. However, it would be improper of me to do this, as I’m involved in the argument.

What BigJon said is problematic, at best a clumsy statement of an idea that he has rendered more clumsy with each defensive refinement. Even if not intended to be, using ‘black people’ as shorthand for ‘cultural communities that trace to West Africa’ or something similar inevitably has a racist connotation. If you are going to make statements and comments about racial groups of people (or other …ism’s) be careful and get your words right.

In this thread, we think it would be counterproductive to enforce strict terms, the subject matter requires some mutual good will to work through. If we don’t see that, we will have to simply lock the thread. If someone states something clumsily, don’t fly off the handle. If someone else has a problem with how you have stated something, don’t fly off the handle. Try to engage mutually in a good spirit, and maybe learn a few things along the way.

what a clusterfuck this thread has turned out to be.
We can all see what the man is trying to say, where he was going with it. For lack of choosing the right phrase to get his point across (which I feel, its too say that there’s a subconscious connection to certain rhythms which correlate to cultural heritage??) some posters have collectively ostracized a fellow Red to the point where we may not see him again
This is NOT how this should go. FFS for all the jokes being made about “Karen” on this board we are walking the ragged edge of disaster when it comes to sensitive topics like religion, race and politics.
Be a little kinder, a little nicer and definitely try to be a bit more forgiving when it comes to recognizing the message instead of the words.

well, he tried to explain it here… but again it’s a case of misunderstandings I think. he’s getting frustrated already here and probably could have just walked away but with racism being insinuated he probably had a hard time doing so.
I’m not going to dig up the past here. nothing good comes of it. hopefully we can all take something from this. I have a hard time believing the man is racist.

about a week ago I saw a car crash coming in this thread, I even posted I was not going to contribute to it anymore. when a discussion degrades into what this did and folks start slapping each other with labels like “racist” it’s time to walk away.
