This is a light hearted and humourous loo look at what Ramadan means to people observing it in different of the world and what we do and think during this holy and spiritual month.
I don’t think i can see Ramadan in the normal after watching this ![]()
This one is so accurate ![]()
It’s interesting that Ramadan and Lent should both start om the same day this year. Has that happened before? They are both tied to lunar cycles.
I’m not religious, but I will be giving up alcohol for Lent in solidarity. I expect there will some Lent-Ramadan solidarity as well. At least we have promised not to eat food around my Muslim colleague who is observing fasting.
I think so, the lunar cycle is 33 year cycle. Next year, Ramadan will go back 10 days so, it will start around about the 8th or 9th February depending on the moon.
If you live in a country where it is cloudy and you can’t see the moon, then, you follow the nearest muslim country which declares Ramadan. For example, Türkiye or Albania etc
It is great Lent and Ramadan is at the same time. In countries like Lebanon and Syria which big Christian communitues it will very nice.
Ramadan has started the same time as Chinese new year as well.
I just looked it up, and they will start in the same week next year, but not on the same day.
Are your fasting hours always determined by local daylight? I can remember it falling around June in Scotland, and the prayer times for it looked insane. Presumably anyone living in the north of Norway must get some special dispensation if it is permanently light?
Yes, we get a Ramadan calender with timings from the locsl halal butchers shop.
You have to finish breakfast (suhoor) by 5.28 am today. Break fast (Iftar) by 5:24 pm today. Then, tomorrow it might be a minute later or earlier as the Ramadan goes on.
Usually first couple of fasts are hard but you get used to it. We make sure we eat healthy at breakfast and hydrate ourselves enough.
With regards to the nordic countries where the sun hardly goes down. There is special dispensation for those muslims. Their mosque/parish will they will follow the Ramadan timetable closest muslim country to them.
I remember my relatives in Glasgow, they had really long hours. There is special dispensation to those who have health issues, on medication who cannot fast. They give money to charity, homeless shelters etc. It is a time for giving to your neighbours regardless what religion you are. My mum often sent a few boxes of food to the neighbours in the evening.
My deeds for Ramadan.
- no sitting in the pub
- no lotto
- no music
-no arguing/swearing/shouting in the In match thread
-be more reflective/spiritual/forgiving/helpful to others/thankful for what you have
However, alot people watching tv to pass the time in between prayers etc at home.
Have a generous Ramadan @Maria
Thank you @Basankayis ,
Will watch the last part of Winter Olympics and footie.
I think this month will go very fast.
Yeah I remember it being closer to May when I worked at Swansea University, we had a community mosque on campus which I would conduct the elections to the committee for. So I do remember partaking for a day or so.
It’s 11:30am, I shouldn’t be getting hungry already. ![]()
Day freakin one!!
Happy Ramadan @Maria and good luck with your deeds, especially No.5.
Not sure I would be able to achieve such a lofty target.
@Maria Salaams
Three spiritual teachers I follow and have learned an immense amount from…their teachings match up perfectly with the example of the Prophet Muhammad and Quranic teachings
Eckhart Tolle, Michael Singer, Dr, Joe Dispenza
Walaikum as-salaam,
Thanks for the info, I will check them out. It is nice to listen some spiritual guidance.
Aww, thank you @aussielad
These targets aren’t easy. If i can get passed the 3rd week, i think i have done well and the end is in sight.
I hope our team does very well in this blessed month.
Haleem time it is then.

The first 4 are achievable in my view.
The not swearing, arguing or shouting in the match threads though, I would have no chance of doing that ![]()
I need some tips on the fried/baked stuff.
Pakoras/Bahjis
Samosas
I just can’t make dough. I use filo pastry.
What filling can i put in the samosas apart from usual potato and veg?
I have charity swear box at home. £1 per swear word!![]()
Imagine Peaches and Regalia, his box would be full by the end of the day.![]()
