Rhys WILLIAMS: 2021/22

He is a 19 year old kid and he is playing as a centre back in the premier league

What were you doing at 19?

The boy will improve.

Loan next season to a football league club where he will play 30 plus games and toughen up a bit will do him the world of good

Not necessarily.

If there a club really wants him and needs him for a good part of their pre-season (tactical bedding in), we can give his spot (if there is one needed for us) in pre-season for training and maybe a friendly or two to another youngester. Maybe Koumetio or Quansah? Whoever deserves it.

Some will still be part of our pre-season of course, some will play, some will only train.

If SVB went to Preston and played I’m sure Rhys will get something similar if not better.

Preston might not be a bad shout to be fair.

Mowbray managed Elliott well at Blackburn so it’s another option, wonder if it is something with us that we look for local loan places for these young lads.

Honestly thought he improved dramatically as then season went on. Thought he had a couple good showings early on and then a game he made mistakes and kind of got exposed.

Vanished from the lineup for a good long time before he got another chance after Kabak’s injury. A lot of coaching and hard work clearly happened in between because he was a much more solid player at the end - the occasional Bambi on ice moments not withstanding.

This is funny, but he definitely has a foundation to him. I’d prefer him to be our 5th choice CB than Phillips or Matip, both take senior squad roster places and get paid far more on the wage bill, particularly in Matips case. Matip in particular may never actually be available when needed too.

It’s strange how much attention was paid to the older and less impressive Phillips, Williams deserved a lot more attention and praise for how well he performed. He’d be my choice (over Phillips and Davies) to be the one hanging around as emergency cover next season, but I can also see the benefits of him playing week in week out for a season, maybe in the Championship.

It’s a bit like Origi had the best stats for goals taken from chances two seasons ago.

No he didn’t.

Sorry at Liverpool.

Also half those goals were incredibly lucky and down to the opposition fucking up basically. That completely screwed the figures.

Davies?
WTF do you know about him?
Strange stat as most of Rhys headers won were against Nat who tried heading everything. I bet Rhys is just thankful that Nat avoids team mates.

Thing with Phillips is he tries to head anything and everything that comes anywhere near him but it’s an uncontrollable tool, like a sledgehammer. The ball goes anywhere without any control, can just as easily land at opposition feet in a good position for them as land for us. He also doesn’t actually win many aerial duels, much more effective at winning aerial interceptions if you like. Phillips has done fantastic and played without himself and over and above his skill level. Its a great story and we should he thankful. However with him it gets blown out of the water a ridiculous amount and overhyped. Williams was a lot younger, a lot less experienced, dealt with things at least as well as Phillips but showed great skill and control. Not even half the hype. If Williams can someone get a bit quicker in certain moments he could still have a long term future here.

Lies, damned lies and statistics. A bit like Williams having the best aerial duel win rate in the league ergo he is better in the air than other Liverpool defenders.

I hope he gets a good loan so he can play regularly next season. Needs games.

I like Rhys, interesting to see how he develops the next couple of years. Wouldn’t mind having him around the coming season, but I guess regular starts would be better for him than staying as option 5 or 6.

I like Williams he looks like a good footballer.
As of Nat that was my point. However his physical presence shouldn’t be underestimated.
Also just kidding with you a bit (I know, I shouldn"'t, you do take this seriously, nothing wrong with that but this knocking of one player against another is silly. so I can’t always help myself.

You like stats as well I get that but stats don’t give the full picture. I mean how do they work?
For instance pass complete percentage, taking Thiago passing to his left how many of those crappy passes were counted as complete just because Robbo or ManĆ© ran back 10 yards when the pass should have been to feet or infront of them? I don’t know even heads won yes but under what circumstances?
Often stats miss the quality or the situation. Nat goes for everything in the air because he believes he can get there and do a job. Admittedly the quality often isn’t there so how does the team adjust to that? which is an important question.
My above example of Thiago really poor quality but gets away with it because Mane and Robbo make an effort yet our momentum has been destroyed and Robbo has to work hard to get anything going again.
I’m waffling to make a point, sometimes a discussion is nicer and I’m sure you’ll pick out a little fraction of what I wrote and make an issue of it.

Anyway just believe me I got your point and don’t disagree (apart from the Davis bit as I don’t know where you get you info from to say such a thing). Williams for me is a fine player for his age and I hope to see more of him in the future or he gets a decent carreer away from us.

Preston might not be a bad shout to loan him out to and ironically it’s his hometown.

I wonder if they need a CB. When they sold Davies and took Sepp van den Berg on loan, they played the kid as RB/RM though Sepp is a CB himself.

That is fairly common for young defenders to start out as a RB or LB before shifting into the middle as they develop physically and gain the experience needed to be in the heart of defence

What I meant is, Preston doesn’t seem to be in need of a CB.
