While the Lieberal National coalition in Oz has actively discouraged anyone going including suggesting that they may fall foul of foreign fighter legislation and they needed to seek their own legal advice. Because the LNP government sure doesn’t have any legal expertise or resources at its disposal…
Before this conflict I hadn’t appreciated how big Ukraine is. When I heard it referred to as the largest country in Europe that really surprised me but it’s more than twice the size of the UK and considerably bigger than Germany as well. Only France comes close to matching it but is still ‘only’ 90% the size of Ukraine.
Of course, in global terms it’s not BIG, BIG. It’s half the size of South Africa for example, 1/16th the size of Canada or the USA and Russia is 28 times bigger…but still, Russia is going to struggle to maintain any sort of control over it long term without committing ridiculous amounts of resources.

I’m having a feeling that
- No real/competent generals were involved in planning this invasion and it’s just a fanciful board-game of Putin and some of kiss-asses. or
- They never really wanted/expected a war. They sort of expected that if they march in Ukraine will negotiate.
Anyway, really upset with what’s happening and the fact that we may haven’t seen the worst.
