Leaves Ukraine incredibly vulnerable to a future attack and almost certainly won’t be free of Russian interference. Ukraine would be better off with a hard partition - a ‘Western’ West of Ukraine (even w/o Kiev) and a broken eastern Russian satellite - where at least a portion of the country can be in the EU, democratic and part of the future.

That means fighting on unfortunately and ultimately may require 10 years of occupation, death and destruction. Probably something for Ukrainians to decide but I suspect that many ultimately are prepared to die for their cause (which is why we are so foolish to not properly support them).

This is exactly what I was insulted for saying.

After the meeting on Thursday between the foreign ministers , Lavrov and Kuleba , there was the suggestion amongst some analysts that discussions had led to what might be the genesis of a framework for an agreement.

It went something like this ; Ukraine would cede Donetsk and Luhansk , relinquish any claims to Crimea and agree to become a neutral actor in the region (Findlandisation). Both Zelensky and Putin have softened their language a little in recent days , so that might be an indication.

Clearly , Ukraine would be giving up its NATO ambitions under such a scenario , but whether or not it would also preclude EU membership remains unclear.

There’s plenty of ifs and buts in there , and it would be seen to be rewarding Putin for his aggression which presumably would be anathema to the Europeans and the US , but still it’s the first plausible plan to end the war that I’ve heard so far. So yeah , who knows ?

This idea is actually more favourable to Russia than what I proposed. I guess they haven’t thought it through.

No it was not. Don’t lie, that pisses me off. As I said, I won’t discuss this further. But it is very aggrieving that you claim that this was what I called you out for. I didn’t insult you either, I condemned what you wrote for a very, very good reason. Read again what you yourself wrote, then read what I wrote since you sit there on a high horse thinking I insulted you for saying this.

Anyway, I have nothing against you, I thought you knew that. But you want Ukraine to surrender now that they have capacity to fight on, and that is completely unacceptable for the reasons I wrote clearly which you now ignored.

I want to focus on what is important, the conflict and not a useless meta debate in any case.

I do not want them to surrender. I never said that.

I said there might be a possibility of an agreement in which Russia gets Donetsk and Luhansk, and Ukraine gets NATO/EU membership. That is a compromise where both sides give something and both sides get something.

That is going to have to be the basis for any agreement, because neither side is going to win an outright victory.

There is nothing ‘obscene’ about that at all.

I think Russia needs to agree terms now before Ukraine pushes them back to the border and then keeps going on to Moscow.

Number is too high I think, but according to analysis I posted above, several BTGs destroyed and others severely degraded. This number is absolutely not to high if it includes WIA:

I wasn’t passing judgement on the merits of it. Just saying that it’s the first time that I’ve heard of the parties seeming to coalesce around what might be the basis for an agreement.

Even if it did prove acceptable though , would that mean sanctions would be lifted too ? I can’t see that happening , but I can see Putin making those kind of demands.
