Russian War Crimes (Part 1)

Part of me worries that the nuclear threat and all the troops that are not involved yet are for NATO. Other than expansion i can’t make sense of what Putin is doing or what he hopes to gain. He seems unhinged from reality. What good can an invasion of Ukraine possibly do for Russia? If he isn’t making sound political decisions, who can say what he’ll do?

Not sure what to make of this, maybe @Magnus knows if this numbers are nearly true

UvdL : First, we are shutting down the EU airspace for Russian-owned, Russian registered or Russian-controlled aircraft.

They won’t be able to land in, take off or overfly the territory of the EU.

Including the private jets of oligarchs.

Second, we will ban the Kremlin’s media machine in the EU.

The state-owned Russia Today and Sputnik, and their subsidiaries,
will no longer be able to spread their lies to justify Putin’s war.

We are developing tools to ban their toxic and harmful disinformation in Europe.

Third, we will target the other aggressor in this war, Lukashenko’s regime, with a new package of sanctions, hitting their most important sectors.

All these measures come on top of the strong package presented yesterday,
agreed by our international partners.

For the first time, the EU will finance the purchase and delivery of weapons and equipment to a country under attack.

Slippery slope.

Question re the threat of using nuclear weapons, how capable would we (I guess I’m talking NATO here) be of intercepting ICBMs?

Secondly, what happens if they are intercepted?

No need to tell me what happens if they aren’t.

Threatening to use Nuclear bombs is just to threaten Ukraine into submission, me thinks.

It’s frightening and a statement of how crazy a man the world, and particularlmy Ukraine, is dealing with.

Any other thinking is naive!

Very capable. Russia would be almost completely reliant on land based ICBM; their strategic bomber force stands very little chance of getting anywhere close to the US or UK although with Europe so close they would be able to get some airborne to launch range. Naval launches
The Russian boomers would likely be targeted as they sortie and the location of those already at sea is most likely known and shadowed, their capability has not increased in line with the West and they’ve had problems.

NATO should have an excellent launch warning system in place and time to intercept and NATO missile defence systems are as good as is possible out there but I doubt they’d be able to get every single warhead; a massive saturation strike is likely to succeed in Europe and with some strikes over the US.

My two cents, anyway. A massive nuclear launch is simply unthinkable.

Normally I would say your are correct, but seeing some of the crap Putin has come out with the last 3 days, he has gone batshit crazy - I wouldn’t put anything past him at this stage

I’d like to think one of his Generals would Novichok him if he ever gave that order.

This is a little troubling.

Or possibly a little light shining through on the flip side. Fuck knows with that lot. I hope they can remember they’re human beings first and military officers second and get rid of Putin.

I have seen this but its apparently fake news. It was on Twitter as well but was taken down quickly.

I’m concerned by this.

If he was not willing to autherize the nuclear forces going to alert and has been replaced that hints at Putin bordering on the totally unhinged and looking to get rig of anyone that opposes him

Thought so. But what happens if we blow an ICBM with a nuclear warhead out of the sky?

Presumably there isn’t a nuclear explosion but what about radiation?

Should do it now , before he even has a chance to.

I am hoping his own generals take him out. He is leading them down a path that will result in their destruction.

The nuclear talk is very concerning as Putin isn’t the sort to make idle threats.

If it is a few warheads I think NATO could intercept, but the proximity of Europe might put large population centers under threat, and if just one got through
 it doesn’t bear thinking about.

If it is multiple warheads in an all out attack, I think many would be intercepted, but at least a fair few would get though, even to America, at which point, yep, doesn’t bear thinking about.

Since he is ratcheting up the nuclear talk, his generals simply must act.

Two variables at that point:

How many of them are true believers with Putin? If they are lockstep with him, well, shit. But if they know their boss is crazy, and need an opportunity to take him out, it might be close at hand.

I also wonder if any senior Russian leaders (friendly generals) have communication channels with the west open? Or maybe with China? Essentially saying we need a way out of this
