Russian forces did not make any significant advances anywhere in Ukraine on May 11, and Ukrainian forces took further ground northeast of Kharkiv. The Ukrainian counteroffensive north of Kharkiv City has forced Russian troops onto the defensive and necessitated reinforcement and replenishment efforts intended to prevent further Ukrainian advances towards the Russian border. Russian efforts along the Southern Axis and in Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts remain similarly stalled, and Russian forces have not made any significant gains in the face of continued successful Ukrainian defenses.

Key Takeaways

  • The Ukrainian counteroffensive north of Kharkiv City has forced Russian troops onto the defensive and has successfully alleviated artillery pressure on Kharkiv City.
  • Russian forces continued efforts to encircle Ukrainian positions in the Severodonetsk-Rubizhne-Lysychansk area but did not make any confirmed advances.
  • Russian forces may be initiating a new advance towards Bakhmut after capturing Popasna in order to secure highway access north to Slovyansk.
  • Russian forces are attempting to consolidate their positions in western Kherson Oblast to push into Mykolaiv Oblast.
  • Pro-Russian Telegram sources reported Ukrainian forces may be conducting a counterattack 40km north of Izyum to cut off Russian units in this key town, though ISW cannot confirm these reports at this time.

Concerning Azov, as I earlier said on the other thread, Azov is not the same organisation that it was in 2015.

Le Sigh

If even half of that is correct, that is Blyatzkrieg in action. Assault river crossing is the most complex army operation there is - half the time they end in a clusterfuck as a peace-time operation with no opposition. One vehicle fails in the wrong place, the whole thing goes pear-shaped.

Then add darkness and it sounds like perhaps some mist.
Then add conscripts who have absolutely no idea what is going on or what to do, almost certainly attempting it for the first time.
Then add heavy artillery, and for bonus marks, pre-ranged by a military engineer looking for crossing points.
Then add a drone feed for fire correction.

I thought it was a good read

Well, the photo documentation matches it. There were 2 bridges laid out on video and losses seem preposterously high :sunglasses:

Yeah, it is credible. They clearly corrected fire with some salvos to go get vehicles/troops in the woods, not immediately adjacent to either side of the bridge.

Yeah, saw the video earlier today. The 2nd and 3rd photos are the telling ones. You can make out where the shell blast points are, and even though those destroyed vehicles are not that close to the bridge, all of the impacts appear to be clustered around the vehicles. Some shots clearly missed by a little, but they weren’t shooting into those woods at random.

Nope, no at all. They knew there was crossing attempt and a column ready to cross, quite clearly. I lean towards the guy boasting he did the recon being correct. It is a stupid thing to lie about, so don’t think he did.

As I say, absolutely credible narrative that fits what we can see with the photos, right down to explaining the odd concentration right at the edge of the water. What I was staggered by when it was pointed out to me was that there is almost no way that fire pattern can be explained without drone fire correction using night vision of some sort. The Russian commanders may as well have ordered mass suicide.
