Ryan GRAVENBERCH: 2024/25

Half the forum wanted to get rid of him at some point or another.

Assessing football players isn’t an exact science.

Not going to get my hopes up too high with this lad but he is the best midfielder in this or any other generation to have ever graced a football pitch.

Has he finally freed Jude up from out of his pocket yet?

Tell that to all the nerds and hipsters.

Please don’t. :grimacing:

I forget who it was who answered my question months ago that was rather similar to @DeathOrGlory 's just yesterday. My brother happens to be a Bayern fan, and he pointed me to what their forums were saying - which was in line with his own view. Decent player, but not Bayern quality, and wasn’t going to be a regular starter as an AM. Not versatile enough to be elsewhere in a stable midfield.

The general reaction was ‘good business’, they doubled their money in a year and moved on.

Hopefully the likes of Gravenberch see Liverpool as a direct step up instead of joining Bayern and watch their career stagnate.

I think there’s a huge element of old boys club with Bayern.

One thing I keep thinking about is what exactly the thing was that made our club’s scouting department think that Gravenberch would be a good buy. Did they identify him as a defensive, central midfielder or an attacking one, to put it bluntly? What role did they think would suit him the best when they looked at his stats and performances?

I got the impression that he was a victim of disjointed planning that’s been taking place since the summer of 2022 and that it was only by pure chance that Slot turned him into the player he’s been over the course of last four months (i.e. because Zubimendi didn’t sign).

I was really disappointed by his debut season and genuinely didn’t know what to expect from him - or that midfield selection in general, it looked top heavy and unbalanced. All of a sudden, it looks like it’s an Endo upgrade away from looking imperious, with two very talented players in each position.

Always thought he had some fantastic touches and loved the way he received the ball, but everything was patchy with no consistency and he looked weak defensively.

Out of all the players I have watched for Liverpool, he is the one that is showing an ability on the ball and defensive consistency that I didn’t think was there.

Slot making the team a bit more “conservative” when it comes to releasing the ball is probably helping him more.

With Klopp it was all about trying to get the ball to the opposition penalty half as quickly as possible.

With Slot it’s more of ensuring that the players are in a proper way to recieve the ball to then progress it.
