Wow, Villa pulling the cord on Samatta pretty early there considering they added him in Jan. They’re still not exactly over-burdened with strikers so he must be pretty bad.

Incidentally, Sky reporting it as a permanent transfer rather than a loan:

Yeah, undisclosed fee, transfermarkt initally had it as a loan.

Maybe in January it was more of a “panic buy”, but then during that half a season, they judged him not good enough. Think he only scored once, against City in the League Cup final.

Now they’ll maybe stick with Wesley and Watkins for that CF role.

Freeing up funds and a spot in the squad for Brewster, perhaps?

Are there any links to Villa?

I have to admit to being a bit sceptical they’ll drop £50m this summer on two strikers, when another expensive one will be back at some point as well.

From today’s BBC gossip column

Reddy,

Aston Villa have made checks on Brewster and could reignite their interest with Mbwana Samatta edging towards an exit.

To be honest, I kind of expected Aston Villa and Crystal Palace to be after Origi - but Brewster’s presence put paid to that, haha! They have a thing for physically gifted strikers, I’m a bit surprised that they are going after Brewster over Origi. Maybe the things have changed there, maybe the homegrown quota is playing its part?

David? Every summer since about 2004.

This is mildly shocking. They give him half of one season to properly bed-in? And after a relegation battle? Maybe it was mutual. Very strange. I know he was elated to be in England. Samatta is either only the first or second Tanzanian to play in the Prem and it was an honor for him. I also thought he looked bright for Villa the few times I saw them. Let’s be honest, they didn’t exactly have an “exciting” squad to begin with. I wish him the best. He has a great spirit and personality about him.
