You know how Patrick Swayze’s brother looks exactly like him, yet is also somehow hideous to look at? This looks like the Adam Driver/Emre Can version of that.
Don’t know too much how he performed at Valencia, but for years now this lad is just changing places and keeps getting opportunities. On the basis of not much, from what I’ve seen. He was linked with Bournemouth before O’Neil’s sacking, so who knows what was the process here. Iraola maybe gave the green light behind the scenes, having worked in Spain last season.
Am I wrong when I say that Outtara’s signing is what kept them in PL? I was really impressed with his direct running and general approach - as if he was playing for a team fighting for trophies, rather than relegation.
He’s got a massive future. He was a statistical outlier in France and I assumed that had dropped when he reached the PL but he holds up almost exactly the same. The goals haven’t flowed yet but he is among the best shot creators in Europe at just 21.
In what sense? Just offensively or other aspects of the game as well?
When he first joined, I thought “OK, probably another one in the series of relatively unknown players signed to help them unsuccessfully fight off relegation, before joining another club and wandering through football system”.
I suspect that his contract isn’t worth a great deal at this point, he’s 33. One year left, PL wages, there wasn’t going to be much of a transfer fee, easy enough to reach an amicable agreement on that foundation if he wants to go play somewhere interesting and the writing is on the wall at Chelsea.
He’s outstanding defensively, devastatingly fast and one of the top players in Europe in terms of shot-creating actions. He’s pretty poor in possession but that’s not completely unexpected for someone who spends the majority of his time running with it.
The way he is such a willing defender is a huge plus.
