Completely. And as I said, it just wasn’t at my Alma mater and it certainly wasn’t for non-football sports. As a student and fundraiser, I saw an amazing community of student-athletes instead of the other way around (including Olympians who were amazing students). But to your point, that’s an idiosyncratic example. I’m just a sore loser because I can’t even name a football player on the team any more because they keep leaving
One last thing @Sweeting, after struggling on these issues a long time my Alma mater actually did just appoint an ex NFL QB alum as GM of the football program. Even the head coach will report to him while he reports directly to the school’s president (not even to the director of athletics actually). He’s a very bright and good young man who was an elite athlete and student. I hope he comes up with a balance that works, but I’m not too hopeful. I’ll keep you posted!
The problem is that while that is true for the revenue sports, it isn’t for so many others. Schools like Stanford now find themselves in the Atlantic Coast Conference(!), bearing huge costs and travel time for student-athletes because of the requirements of at best 2 teams of athlete-students.
Caitlin Clark and Travis Kelce on NIL and the portal and the moss of amateurism we were discussing above:
Da Bears with momentum into 25-26.
Downward momentum, obviously.
Oh shoot. The draft pick!
I’ll have to check Tankathon after the 4:25 games to see the final draft order for the non-playoff teams.
Caleb 1-0 at Lambeau, @cynicaloldgit
Da Bears are back!
I will now root for your Rams to join da Bears as undefeated teams in 2025
We’re resting our starters today, so I don’t expect us to win.
I saw that but they could go for the 3 seed now.
Jimmy G off to a flyer.
Do you know why I left Bryce Young on my bench in my final? One of those weekends.
Do enlighten me…
Wish I knew but I do tend to be mistake prone. Sigh. I hate sports.
Confirmed draft order, for the non-playoff teams at least:
I see your Bears are at 10. Looks like prime trade territory.
Been frustrated with Sarkesian’s playcalling all season but it’s just got shown up on the biggest stage.
As a Michigan guy fed up with hearing about the SEC, I was very conflicted. That Texas offence definitely seems to be less than the sum of the parts. Neither side got anywhere with the run, but OSU at least forced Texas to defend it. As you say, Sarkisian just seemed determined to go right into the teeth of the OSU defence.
Well, since this is the NFL thread, I’m heading down to Tampa tomorrow for the game. Have an old friend down there who got us tickets, and it’s only a 6 hour easy drive. I just hope the Commies play a solid game, no delusions that they will win, but always hopeful.
