Yep, agreeance.

Sorry @cynicaloldgit but it has to feel good knowing I was on your side.

Not really.

Congratulations @jgw_geneseo

Get your tickets to Arrow Head.

Go Birds! My asshole was watertight on that last drive, though. Hope Jalen’s okay. Fuck Josh Harris and the Commanders (and Washington in general, really).

Go Bills, also! Best of luck with the KC refs.

Who needs sleep? Let’s go. Bring on the evil empire. Time to slay the beast.

Going back a bit to the earlier convo about the NCAA, did anyone read the story about Marshall? Their head coach has taken a new role for next season and the players responded by jumping in the transfer portal en masse. They lost something like 35 since the end of the regular season and ended up without enough players left to play their bowl so declined the invitation. The NCAA has now fined the program $100k despite being able to easily find a replacement side to fill in for them.

The expanded bowl series has long had a bunch of bad, pretty much meaningless games. But that has only become worse with the expansion of the play offs, NIL and the transfer portal. Outside of the playoffs there are now probably only about 2 or 3 bowl games that teams and players would consider anything other than a chore and an unnecessary risk to their earning potential.

YAY for the Olympic Spirit of college sports.

I love Andrew and will always wish him success because he’s a top person and was always my model for a student-athlete, but the need for general managers in college sports certainly substantiates your point on the demise of the amateur ideal.

I have this picture of college football fans scrambling today to see who actually even plays for OSU and ND: “Wait, wasn’t he at QB at Duke 7 years ago?”

I didn’t watch any college foot all before moving to America in 2020 and I still find the Bowl games strange. I don’t really get what the supposed interest is for either team in playing in the Taco-Bell Bowl against another 6-6 team.

It’s such a weird format, I would love to scrap all of it and start over fresh but unfortunately that will never happen.

The national title game is a relatively modern thing - maybe only 25 years or so old. Before then the national title was awarded by the coaches just picking who they thought the best team was, which is why if you look through history you will see references to “shared titles” in years where there was not agreement. In that era the bowl games had value and answered questions of who was better than whom, which conference was better etc. Sometimes it if it was lucky a bowl could have national title ramifications, but they had relevance even outside of that. Once they brought in an official national title game, then expanded it to a 4 team, an 8 team, and now 12 team play offs the rest of the bowl games outside of this tournament do not make a lot of sense, but tradition is hard to shake even when it is totally anachronistic.

And the “lesser” bowls have even less meaning now as star players sit out to protect themselves for the draft at no cost. I actually gave up on college football the day Mccaffrey did that.

Howling! And now my Dodgers have hosed my Bears. I’m conflicted but I’m even Steven.

Come on, Bears. Do something.
