Something we see in football all the time. I could see 3-4 clubs in Prem queueing up to sign Gomez, they’d take that risk because when he’s not a crock he’s decent.
With Fab, I could see many clubs in Europe taking him…where they perhaps don’t look to someone’s legs being gone as a huge detriment seeing as “their league is a lot slower and less physical than the prem”
I think Henderson slots straight into the Milner role.
What I think happens with Fab depends on what we think is going on with him.
He is contracted until 2026. Think that precluded a move this summer. I don’t think he’ll want it, and given his form, I don’t think clubs will be that keen to take him. He is on a decent wage and has just had a baby, so I think it’s optimistic to think he would be up for a move.
If his legs have gone, and we’ve basically fucked him, I can see a route to him reinventing himself as a centre back. Perhaps if Matip or Gomez departs he has a role to play backing up Virgil and Konate?
Or it might be there is plenty of life in Fab, and it’s just a matter of getting the right players around him, and embedding the right system that doesn’t expose him as much as he is getting exposed at the minute. In which case I can see him continuing in midfield, perhaps less a certain starter and more a squad player.
I wouldn’t sell him. He is struggling after horror injuries, but there is plenty of time for him. In fact I would not be disappointed to see him get the RB slot to release Trent into midfield.
Anyway. I think PL clubs would be nibbling at £10-15m for Gomez. I think he is great, but he has also got three serious knee injuries in his history and, objectively, it would be a hell of a gamble for a club to put more than that down on him.
I’m not sure how true that might be. There will be cheaper imports that would/could be deemed as of similar of higher quality and will likely demand a lower wage.
I think very. West Ham Villa Palace Newcastle all pay excessively for players, could even see Everton coming in for Gomez.
These clubs will look to England first as homegrown options. We’ve done incredibly well flogging off deadwood for ridiculous amounts especially to Prem clubs…why would that suddenly stop?
In some ways I guess I don’t want to think about this because I want there to be a possibility that he can make it with us as a versatile backup if not an out an out CB…
Regarding the teams you mention, only NU may take a punt but you’d imagine they’re shopping with a bit more snobbish air now… As to the others, I’m not convinced they’d part with anything north of 15M. His recent injury bouts and lack of consistent game time might put people off - particularly the injury bouts.
It already has, hence Ox and Phillips still being here, and Origi staying at least a year longer than expected. You can only “fleece” teams for so long before you start getting a reputation as a club you cannot get good value from and everyone responds by under bidding or ignoring us altogether
Or is the speed and physical nature of the league and what we ask our midfield to do the reason for said injuries? Don’t get me wrong I like Keita, but my point is that Caicedo has proven - at least to some extent- that he can handle the premier league. Is that not less risky than bringing in a player a little cheaper from another league? I think so.
The encouraging thing about Caiecdo is how quickly he hit the ground running. He hasn’t played many games, but he had a big presence from day 1 and has hardly had a bad game. Brighton are the sort of team that I had come to appreciate played nice football, but were likely better than the sum of their parts so I wasnt too aware of too many of their players individually. Then at some point around this time of last season I watched them and was noticed one of their CMs having an immense game and noted his name as Caiecdo. I didnt think too much of it because I appreciated I just didnt know too many of their players. I only realized a week or two later that it was only his 2nd or 3rd game and he was only 20
I don’t think we’re signing a midfielder in this window. If we were I think we’d have done it by now.
In my opinion it’s such an important position for us to recruit to and do it well, that I don’t believe we wouldn’t have already done the groundwork for it and had the deal agreed for a while.
I can’t see us messing around with bidding wars or waiting till the last day to try and get someone in.
