The failure of the government is one angle to this social murder narrative. I would also argue to consider the people who willfully breaks key covid restrictions when everyone has been told that it might cause harm to people, family or stranger, around you.
If the government were held accountable under Health and Safety Law they would have a difficult case to answer for. It is one of the very few instances where you are guilty until proven innocent.
Personally, I hope they are held accountable in some form. To me the idea that these people (and I include Dominic Cummings in this) can somehow walk off into the sunset when they have done their “stint” is abhorrent and provides no answers to the 100+k deaths in the UK. They deserve better.
That’s something the conservative government have been trying to drum into our minds. I think it was pmq’s recently where Hancock was speaking about the new quarantine measures and the heavy fines for not following the rules. I think he used the phrase ‘punish the few to protect the many’. Now that might sound ok but then we are talking about a government that’s only ever had voluntary quarantine and only for about 2 of the last 10 months.
The second wave is NOT caused by a few. It’s caused by an absolute disregard for border control. And free movement for the virus. In a week’s time they will clamp down slightly by closing borders to some countries. In essence the UK will continually be behind the game as the virus finds other avenues to get into the country.
I nearly choked on my cornflakes yesterday when the BBC reported the UK quarantine proposal will not be as strict as the Australian one. Well no shit. Australia is blocking all countries regardless of their covid situation. And they are still learning what works and what doesn’t with the quarantine system. It’s difficult to believe that a government that has continually dropped the ball will be able to achieve what more experienced countries are still having difficulty with. If it wasn’t for the recent good work with the vaccine rollout I would have said absolutely no chance.
@Arminius’s post above about the UK’s prospects if we avoid the highly transmissive variants is imo going to be extremely difficult to achieve. The quarantine doesn’t go far enough, and if we’ve learnt anything from the last 10 months, is that this government lacks the intestinal fortitude to aim for outright elimination of the virus within our borders.
If Australia is blocking all countries, why does it need a quarantine system at all?
There were something like 40,000 Australians trying to return home at one point not so long ago.
Quite a scary thought that there are potentially 40,000 @SBYM 's walking among us.
Testing on 6 year olds and upwards.
Here’s hoping it all goes well.
Probably the most sensible post I have read on this subject.
Apart from totally misunderstanding what the issue is as between the EU and AstraZeneca or what part, if any, the UK has in that.
Apart from all that.
As usual your "high falutin I know everything " opinion conflicts with my more modest down to earth opinion. Why don´t you just stop commenting on my posts and I will ignore yours as it is obvious we are never going to agree.
Deal ?
My opinion reflects those of legal experts, like me, who’ve looked at the contract. So there’s that and opinions that are non-expert and ill-informed, like yours.
You are so arrogant it is hard to believe. Even legal experts can be wrong as has been proven many times and every human being is entitled to an opinion. You obviously do not agree with that though as you are to busy trying to show people how clever you are .
Had enough of experts, have we?
Because visas for Australians in foreign countries didn’t all expire on the 20th march 2020 when Australia shut it’s borders? The only people allowed to leave Australia are foreigners returning home. The only people allowed to enter are Australian citizens returning home.
As I’ve said previously, the countries that are doing well are the ones playing an entirely different ballgame to the rest of us.
Every single one of my friends and relatives over 60 has now had their first vaccine. I got my text on Wednesday afternoon and got the jab the following day. My daughter in France doesn’t know of anyone including her 70+ parents in law who have been jabbed yet.
Excellent news. Did you have the AstraZeneca or Pfizer one? My father in law had the AZ one on Monday. He had one slightly feverish night but is now feeling fine. How are you feeling?
Had the Pfizer and have felt fine, as has my wife…
Have heard a few people say they had a day or two feeling a bit under the weather…
Going to phone to see if there’s a slot for me on Monday I think. The local health board has posted up that there’s vacant appointments (bizarrely) but we’ll see what they say. I’ve no issue waiting but I dont want to be missed either, especially if there’s spare appointments up for grabs.
So COVID is back in NZ.
A worker who does airline laundry, and her family have tested positive this afternoon.
So Auckland has gone into level 3 for the next 3 days from midnight tonight. Thats schools closed, only supermarkets, butchers, grocers, petrol stations , and pharmacies open. All other people to work from home. Everyone recommended to stay at home.
The rest of NZ has moved to level 2.
Genome sequencing should tell us what variant it is in a couple of hours. Fingers crossed it’s limited to the one family.
you can actually look at different aspects n this graph.
Vaccines per 100 UK 22.2 3rd
Total vaccines UK 15.09million 5th
Good to see the vaccine numbers growing everywhere.
