The Corona Pandemic

She’s like a reverse Midas, but she’s posh and plays polo with the right people so it’s all fine.

I hope she doesn’t shoot grouse.

Her record on hitting targets would have me a little worried being anywhere near the same field as her.

It’s fine, she always travels with Chris Grayling thereby ensuring that they never end up where they should.

Worth a listen. Recorded years ago but just as relevant I suspect:

That sounds great. I think the psychology is risk is fascinating. There has been really great work over the last decade or so suggesting the your position on the traditional left-right axis may be less because of your political ideolgy, but rather your political ideology is driven by the way your brain reacts to fear signals.

Years ago I started using what’s called functional MRIs in my studies on metabolism. It basically allows you observe what is happening in the brain in response to certain stimuli, and what was cool is that it’s an approach that people from a really wide range of fields use. So during my time using it I got into tons of really interesting conversations with people about their work that Id otherwise have known nothing about. There was one linguist who had been looking at the role of language structure on perception of risk. What he knew as a was that different languages use past, present and future tense differently. Finnish, for example, supposedly has no way of clearly distinguishing among these ideas. What they did with the fMRI wasnt that fascinating, but it was the ideas they had already formed they were trying t support that I found fascinating. I dont remember the details, but I do remember it was a bit counter intuitive. I think what it was is that Fins saved for retirement better than people in other countries because their language structure forced them to think of retirement of something in the present and so they were happy to make the sacrifice to save. What they then saw with the fMRIs was less of a distinction in the brain between things that presented immediate risk and those that presented long term risk than in native english speakers.

I thought it was again time for an up date from the gushing torrents of the south of France.
This has gone from cacaphonie to nonsense and is now in that usual, for these days, shitshow status.
Bars are now closed, well at least in Paris, yet restaurants can stay open until 22:00 hrs.
Paris has 200 cases a day entering ICU and the heads of service are saying they lack resources. Macron in his great wisdom has claimed its a problem of organisation (perhaps because in the Gers he’s heard that 5 nurses and a dog managed to get 5 hours sleep in the week) still Parisienne hospitals are at breaking point and bussing in 5 nurses from the Gers doesn’t seem to be the solution. So perhaps a few hundred helicopters from the EU can start shipping ICU patients to Germany?
I mean Marseille is still a shitshow and that’s been on going for months now.
Anyway the holidays are over the tourism has buffered the bar and restaurant owners of the south (they can live till next summer now as they do every year) so these restrictions dont harm the south much. When the ski season starts i am sure bars and restaurants will go back to opening ‘normal’ hours through popular demand. The shitshow will get another boost. I wonder if it will cause a 3rd wave or if it will just create a tidal wave adding on to this autumns figures?
So technically this isn’t a 2nd wave, i can’t be bothered to understand the technicalities of this bullshit. I see 2 waves I count 2, I see we got the 1st of these waves under controll and then some dickstick decided they wanted more and told everyone they could pop off to the south of France congregate on beaches, at sandwich bars, in cafés and restaurants with no protection for good measure. I mean at the best of time French restaurants have very dubious hygiene then there’s those take away burgers and pizzas I assure you I have never eaten one of those things without having severe runny shit after (except for Mc Chicken sandwich which they have to do fresh for me as I seem to be the only person who eats them).
Blimey that was a long addition to tyhe cacaphonie, could go on about the economy and how if you got it right you could set your country up for a long time to come. As usual it seems more countries in Asia have got a better balance so se’ll leave it at that.

So I’m isolating, keep safe and think wash hands, wear mask, wipe surfaces you are using down and don’t let those unmasked idiots get away with it (not that I think masks are a major factor but it does indicate that people are aware).

fMRI is amazing but I don’t think we are close to harnessing its power yet and its accuracy is questionable. It really struggles with b/w subjects variability and it would be great if protocol controls for blood pressure & heart rate etc were standardised. Basically the underlying assumptions used to interpret the data aren’t generally well tested and the sheer volume of data means that I think that we are still several computing generations away from it being done properly.

Wtf?

Just scrolling through recent tweets from the Washington Examiner…has it always lent so heavily towards Trump?

The examiner exists solely as a supposed counter balance to the “liberal bias of the MSM”. It has no serious journalistic reason for being.

That was my impression. Not sure I’ve ever read any of their articles.

It took me a while to get it tbh…

trump was sailing towards re-election before covid hit, her premise is generally correct there

Apart from according to just about every relevent metric, sure.

he was consistently within the MOE or close to it against biden nationally and in the states that actually matter

biden’s cushion against him is absolutely the product of trump’s callous incompetence finally being applied to something that personally affected asset-owning boomers

Being within the margin of error doesn’t sound to me as if he was sailing.

he beat hillary by negative 3m votes

he still might win florida & ohio, they weren’t really in play before the rona

so he just needed to win one out of michigan/pennsylvania/wisconsin, against NAFTA joe biden, while cheating even more than a normal republican

for somebody hated by 55% of the country, that’s ‘cruising’ to me

I was wondering if she’d had plastic surgery on her brain as well.

Right back into the soup here, daily rates of infection worse now than it ever was this Spring. Steps toward a lockdown announce today right before our Thanksgiving weekend.
