The Corona Pandemic

Hope that clears up quickly.

hope all is ok

Hey, hey, hey, how are you doing mate. Did you have any side effects after the first dose? Have you consulted a doctor?

The European Commission is getting ready to launch legal proceedings against vaccine producer AstraZeneca, according to five EU diplomats.

The Commission raised the matter at a meeting of ambassadors Wednesday, during which the majority of EU countries said they would support suing the company over complaints it massively failed to deliver pledged doses to the bloc.

One diplomat clarified that the point of the legal proceedings is to make it mandatory for AstraZeneca to provide the doses set out in its EU contract.

Two of the diplomats said there was a deadline later this week, by which point EU countries must sign off on launching legal proceedings.

AstraZeneca stoked the ire of the EU in January when it said it would not be able to offer the bloc the number of doses initially anticipated. By the end of the first quarter, the company delivered 30 million doses to EU countries, rather than the 100 million doses pledged in its EU contract. The shortages severely hampered the vaccination campaigns across EU countries.

The company has projected it would deliver roughly 70 million doses by the end of the second quarter of the year, when it was supposed to have delivered the entire 300 million doses secured in the EU contract.

Only joking about the blindness as I really do think I need some glasses. But last night was rough. Took about 12 hours to kick in so I’m expecting another rough day. I’ve always had a robust immune response to vaccines though. I remember one I had for yellow fever kept me in bed for about 2 days. This is small change in comparison to that, and comparison to another bout of actual covid.

Take care mate

This is going to blow up spectacularly in the Commission’s face.

86.461 new vaccinations registered in The Netherlands yesterday, numbers are going down again.

At this stage they should just leave it.AZ may be the vaccine that has saved the UK from this pandemic but unfortunately it’s not been the same for the EU.We’re barely getting anything from AZ in terms of the number of doses that would be needed and most of the EU has at this point restricted it’s use to a lesser amount of people than origionally intended.I can only think the intention in this is to get whatever monies they’ve paid to the company back but that’s unlikely to happen i think.Let them deliver what they can but don’t factor those intended deliveries into the planned vaccination schedule.

In Germany, everyone under 60, who would still like to be vaccinated with AstraZeneca must sign a disclaimer of liability “Haftungsverzichtserklärung”. (lovely word)

Think about it

The EU is in a tricky position because as far as I can see, the only reason they are suing is the principle.

There is nothing to be gained in suing AZ beside maybe some good PR for politicians. AstraZeneca is still expected to deliver 100m to the EU in the first half of this year (at cost price).

Whats a judge going to do ? Several companies have failed to deliver anything and are unpunished, there are no profits from AZ from this exercise. Still delivering millions of doses. Whats the EUs end game ?

What does it hope to achieve from taking legal action ? By the time the case is concluded (1 to 2 years) you would hope that the pandemic is over. Even if its not, AZ would be pretty low priority on half dozen different vaccine options.

Its looks like an action driven by emotion more than anything else.

A month ago I got a fine for not wearing a mask. I am extremely cautious about mask wearing and distancing and nobody could believe I got a fine for not using one. I was in an all but deserted parking lot by the beach with nobody within 20 or 30 meters and the only people within 50 meters of me were a couple and a police patrol vehicle. My phone rang, the person could not hear me, I took it off, talked for a few minutes, cut the call and was putting my phone back in my pocket with my mask in my hand (still with nobody in any close proximity) and as I was putting it on, the patrol people rock up and I am called to the post which was a little down the road and charged and fined. So I argued my case, to no avail, and got a fine which was due to be paid today at the local police station.

You guys want to know the height of irony? Paying a fine for not wearing a mask to a police officer who isn’t wearing a mask…
