The Corona Pandemic

That interpretation does not shine a great light on the EU. The EU stated again and again the only reason it was taking legal action was to secure doses. At the press conference of legal action the EU explicitly stated it was not to punish AZ or seek a fine but to secure doses. If we now state that was not the intent (as per Dave Keating) the obvious question is why ?

If the reason is financial. It is not a good look to sue manufacturer not making any profit.

If the reason is principle, it appears politically motivated. Deflecting blame for poor vaccine rollout. Also raises questions why AZ singled out from other vaccine suppliers (many yet to deliver anything)

If the reason is to ensure preference in future. The court said the EU has no exclusivity or right of priority.

I get the costs argument and that AstraZeneca was in breach. But the intent of legal action was clearly deliver doses or have huge fine. The EU failed in this regard.

I’m not even convinced by the suggestion that the court found that AstraZeneca was in serious breach. It awarded no damages and effectively said that AstraZeneca should deliver in accordance with a delivery schedule it is already surpassing.

The costs apportionment also appears to be a red herring when trying to claim vindication. AstraZeneca’s costs were more than twice those of the EU, for obvious reasons. The court effectively ordered the parties to pay their own costs.

Has the EU got damages? No.
Has the EU got extra doses it said AstraZeneca was obligated to deliver? No.
Has AstraZeneca been made to use the UK sites to service the EU supply as the EU insisted it was obligated to do? No.

It failed on any measurable objective.

Fingers crossed, but there is some pressure starting to build on the NHS.

Yes, 27 deaths reported yesterday is as high as it’s been for a couple of months.

Hospital admissions remain relatively manageable though, as well as the numbers in hospital.

Dread to think what it would be like if 82% of the adult population hadn’t already had their first jab mind (60% of adults having had both). It would be very dire right now and the concern is that it looks like it’s spreading on the continent now too.

It’s a huge concern here in Germany. We’ve managed to get our daily infections down below 1,000, but the UK is now over 10,000.
Only 50% have had their first vaccine and 30% are fully vaccinated, so Delta could completely undo all the good work and send us back into severe lockdown.

Definintely. Perfect timing for the usual nutcases in charge of states to get rid of masks in schools…

When comparing numbers, maybe we should at least somehow consider the much higher percentage of mRNA vaccinations. Not sure if the data is still up to date (?), but I had seen a study where one shot of Pfizer is as effective against hospitalisation (Delta) as two shots of AZ.
And not compare percentage of adult population vs percentage of overall population.

I’m not sure that’s right. I think one dose of Pfizer is about twice as effective against Delta as one dose of AstraZeneca (60% to 30%) but after two they’re both over 80% (quite incredible how much of a difference that second AstraZeneca shot makes).

We’ve nearly all finished the second AstraZeneca jabs now so we’re predominantly just doing mRNA from this point (both first and second jabs).

Not sure about the ratio of AZ/Pfizer compared between the UK and Germany, but I have heard it mentioned.
School holidays are starting here today. Not sure whether that will help or not, as a lot of people will be going abroad and piling into the swimming pools etc.
Don’t understand your last sentence :frowning:

Had my second Fizzer jab yesterday and no problem apart from pain at the point of entry.

I was talking about protection from hospitalisation. Not sure if that PHE data is still up to date, but it says 94% for one shot with Pfizer vs 92% two shots of AZ (Delta).

It’s roughly about 80% mRNA in Germany I think.
Last sentence was about comparing percentage of adult population vs overall population. Kopstar used percentage of adult population for UK, you used percentage of overall population for Germany. Perfectly fine to use either one, just not when comparing. That’s all.
Glad to hear you had no real side effects.

ENHANCED EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SUMMARY Confirmed Cases of COVID-19 Following Vaccination in Ontario: December 14, 2020 to June 12, 2021

Highlights
• Of the almost 9.4 million vaccinated individuals only 0.15% (14,293 individuals including both symptomatic and asymptomatic cases) became infected when they were partially vaccinated and only 0.02% (1,648 individuals) became infected when they were fully vaccinated; as these were fully vaccinated individuals, these are considered breakthrough cases.

• The number of post-vaccination cases declines dramatically as time from vaccination increases. The number of post-vaccination cases appears to decrease at about 10 days after dose 1. A marked decrease in post-vaccination cases is observed 28 or more days after dose 1 and very few cases are reported following dose 2.

• Only 4.8% of cases post-vaccination occurred 7 or more days after dose 2 administration and are considered breakthrough cases.

• Partially vaccinated and breakthrough cases comprise a very small proportion of the total number of COVID-19 cases reported since December 14, 2020 and up to June 12, 2021. Of the 396,076 COVID-19 cases reported in this time period, 3.6% were partially vaccinated and 0.4% were breakthrough cases.

  • The proportions of partially vaccinated and breakthrough cases were small in each age group, but increased with age, and were highest among cases 80+ years of age.

UK new cases going through the roof.

Hardly surprising is it? When we allow demonstrations to take place every weekend, 20,000 Scotland fans are allowed to party in central London and the younger generation basically don’t give a fuck!

Yes, quite right. I don’t know what the percentage is of adults vaccinated in Germany so comparing the % of total population…

At least one jab:
UK 64%
Germany 51.23%

Fully vaxed
UK 46.76%
Germany 32.2%

Yep, that’s the numbers I had heard as well. Much less massive difference, combined with high percentage of mRNA that is highly effective even against Delta after one jab. Unfortunately our government has been busy easing restrictions so we also get a chance to catch up with the UK’s Delta numbers asap…
