The Corona Pandemic

It has to be appreciated how much these companies, especially the ones who got their products into phase III trials, diverted efforts from other areas to do the covid work. This was not additional revenue, but revenue that came at the cost of massively scaling back work across other areas. Not all of that work would have been revenue generating, or even generating revenue this year so its going to be difficult to piece out the commercial effects from just the last few financial reports, but the impact was significant.

For example, in March 2020 we were forced to let go of literally 50% of our operations work force because the pharma contracts we had been scaling up for were all, 100% of them, immediately shelved as resources were pushed to doing Covid studies.

Companies like Pfizer and AZ eventually moving to a more normal pricing model is reasonable and far more defensible that Moderna’s take on their right to their patent

Sadly, as you well know all of this will be ignored by those that wish to push an agenda in the other direction. Pharma has long been seen as some kind of evil entity largely born out of the US health care model I think. That Moderna story on fuels that story further sadly.

I’ve seen social media posts being completely ignorant of the fact that AZ were only seeking to recuperate costs. I can just see the anti vax proponents pushing the line of AZ seeking to " screw" the public etc. as evidence of the grand conspiracy.

Just looked at Austria’s Covid curves and doing something looks necessary. Not sure if this is the right course of action though. They have 64% of the population fully vaccinated

Interesting development. Not sure how practical it’ll be, and there will be implications for civil liberties

Sorry @Noo_Noo FT had a paywall

No problem.

Are the unvaccinated the big problem here? Sadly all the numbers appear to be heading in the wrong direction. Austria is currently on a really steep up curve.

So the UK government got everything wrong and yet life here is now pretty much back to normal.

Average 165 died every day last week. Over 36,000 new cases daily average. It’s only recently started to drop having climbing steadily since the beginning of August.

Only reason life is “normal” is because your glorious leader won’t deal with it.

Yes they are. 65% vaxxed in Austria, 69% in Germany. Vast majority of serious cases are unvaxxed.
They are burdening the health services and extending the crisis.
Just saw a stat that 50% of unvaxxed in Germany are AFD voters. Probably same in Austria.
Lock 'em up!

The UK will probably become one of the world’s leading centers for understanding long covid. At current infection rates plus the past 18 months, the percentage of UK children who have contracted it must be staggering.

Our, unless you reject the concept of democracy.

As for deaths, whilst any are terrible, we’re lightyears better than we were before the vaccine roll out.

I have never understood this “any death is a tragedy” spiel.

Death is inevitable. Nobody knows where, when or how… but it happens to us all.

It’s not as though everyone has 100 years, so if somebody dies when they’re 30, we can say they lost 70 years.

Not at all. I believe a government has an obligation to protect and nurture its people. Letting the bodies pile high because our so called PM can’t be asked doesn’t cut it for me.

He’s responsible for thousands of needless deaths imo, which is kind of against the job brief if you ask me.

We simply have too many doubters here, I am so so tired about this meanwhile. Its depressing!

We have a partial lockdown in the Netherland for 3 weeks. We also have a mostly right-wing government so for most of you it is probably their fault … :innocent:
