The Corona Pandemic

Some definitely are, but pandemic anti-vaccine sentiment has made for some strange bedfellows. Anti-vaccine misinformation has been allowed to circulate freely in ‘wellness’ circles for at least a generation, and those don’t really skew right, or haven’t until recently. In Ontario, during our recent federal election, a pollster did a sample to identify the ‘characteristic anti-vaxxer’. Turns out that here at least, she is a middle-class woman within 4 years of 50 years old with ~2 years of post-secondary education, who normally votes Liberal (centrist).

What was undeniably right-wing was the political party that took an explicitly anti-vax stance, the PPC. That led to a whole new tranche of voters being attracted to the PPC, previously largely the domain of white supremacists and the like.

So no, anti-vaxxers aren’t all right wing, but one of the grim possibilities is that more of them will become right-wing extremists on other issues.

Well, there is a conversation to be had about attacks on democracy. We have a policing bill currently going through Parliament that effectively criminalises protest*. That’s a direct assault on democracy. People don’t seem arsed.

(*Amusingly Boris’ pledge to ‘lay down in front of the bulldozers’ to stop the third runway, would be subject to a year custodial sentence in his party’s new law)

However, I don’t consider taking measures to stop a pandemic and save lives anti-democratic. It boils my piss that people conflate ‘freedom’ with covid measures. If people don’t get jabbed and take other measures to get the pandemic under control, we’ll spend a lot longer feeling less free than we used to.

Sorry I’m don’t really going to go down that rabbit hole with you. If you think vaccine’s are about big pharma controlling the world order more power to you. But its strange that those that often push this come from that side. Barrington Declaration, Craig Kelly, Donald Trump to name a couple.

Is there a big pharma problem? Most definitely and yet the AZ vaccine was offered at cost until recently and still is for developing countries.

No, not all anti vaxxers are right wing. Piers Corbyn for example, I dont think he leans that way.

Freedom wise it’s kind of odd that I’m more free to do things having been vaccinated and willing to wear a mask than those that aren’t. For my mind people need to start to understand that living without some level of consequence or effect is not really possible.

Yeah I guess so , the fact that fauci and co gave money to the Wuhan lab to test all this shit and the fact that China hosted some form of military games in 2019 where stories of the first person to have become infected was an American woman who took part is merely coincidence, and the fact that when America blamed China , China counter claimed and offered their evidence that it was made in an American lab is all smokescreens…the fact that America and china weaponised a virus to unleash on the world is inconsequential…as long as the pharmaceutical companies have created a vaccine to protect us from it is all that counts…how people have not overthrown their respective countries government and business leaders has been a mystery for a while

How the UK continues to vote Conservative and how the hell Trump got into power is a real mystery that’s for certain. I know a former member on here would have a perfectly valid reply to that issue.

Just out of curiosity how is it a conspiracy when at the time it was being reported in the press?

Weee look at em go.

I don’t think anyone has any desire to follow you down a rabbit hole of conspiratorial paranoia. There is no point going there for either of us.

Crazy and deliberate miss interpretation as well as taking the whole post out of context, well done!

Not paranoid nor bothered about conspiracy, I respect people’s choice as everyone has their own personal beliefs, but at the end of the day I think fauci like Johnson and others is a slimy lying cunt

Steady, mate…

I’m good

I think it’s fair to say that many of those who oppose the vaccines are libertarians. They value individual choice and freedoms (oppose government mandates, support economic freedoms). Whilst libertarians are neither left or right wing, I think it’s fair to say western political parties of the right have pandered to this thinking.

The opposite to libertarians are authoritarians. They have called for less freedoms and greater government intervention. This has been the approach of parties largely to the left. The collective/society more important than the individual. Government interaction to prevent loss of life rather than freedoms for business.

Whilst true that antivaxxers are not left or right. Political and moral philosophy does come into vaccination rates and complience. In the US at least the biggest predictor of vaccination status is not your race, or income but which political party you voted for. The contrast is pretty stark.

In this case, however, that tracked with the data on who was getting vaccinated and when. American data shows similar.

In my experience the libertarian viewpoint is less about individual freedom and more the the right to say ‘fuck everyone else’. That’s certainly true with Covid.
