The Corona Pandemic

probably the worst part of the experience was being herded into a packed plane and having to wear a mask for 6 hours in an enclosed environment, then landing in Cancun and that cattle depot of a customs/immigration area. We all ditched our masks on the plane in the bathrooms and donned new ones just for that area. it was unreal and made my wife (who has been working from home since this all hit and not venturing out much) very uneasy about traveling.

Now that the CAN/US border is open for travel, I think we’ll be doing more driving shorter trips instead of leaving the continent.

my wife and I are both able to work remotely so quarantine isn’t much of an issue for us. I did the home schooling for the two weeks we were home with him and he made pretty good progress in his reading while we were away.

Further south and a little west.

No worries. It has been reported in the local news here how the have been very long queues and a single nurse vaccinating in Sevenoaks. Maybe it’s the same across the country!

It was the same when we travelled to Tenerife in October. Several flights arrived around the same time and passengers were herded into arrivals. It reminded me of a cattle market and there was insufficient staff to deal with passport control and checking COVID passes. Very chaotic.

I’m watching very carefully. I’m hoping to get a ski trip in this Winter, towards the end of Feb / early March. To say I’m apprehensive of the trip is an understatement.

If you do manage to get away, for your return flight to the UK, I’d advise you to pay in advance, for fast track passport control. It’s only £5 per person at Manchester Airport and it will save you having to stand in a massive queue. It was well worth it. I paid for it through the Holiday Extras site.

Id rather them suspend the season than play in empty stadiums again. That was so souless and boring…

This Covid is here to stay we either crack on or give up on life and do nothing ever (normal) again.
We cant keep locking down or having no sense restrictions where you dont have to wear a mask in a pub but do if you need a pint of milk.

What have I missed here? I feel I’ve missed an opportunity

Personally I think it gets to a point similar to other previous pandemics or illnesses. Vaccines get better, or become a annual thing like flu. Perhaps it burns itself into something far less problematic as suggested by @Arminius?

Just need to see it through I think. There’s almost a process to it.

If our own Conservative PM is being overly pessimistic about Omicron given what he’s been about the last 18 months, then that has me worried and makes me sit up and pay attention.

If Omicron can really escape the vaccine as well as indicated, then we can expect massive numbers of infections in the next 6-8 weeks. You can already get a glimpse of that in the UK cases graph which is climbing rapidly.

Whether Omicron results in less severe illness will not matter much if infections skyrocket.

Where’s the evidence that the vaccine is making people more likely to get infected?
There seems to be a lot of evidence to the contrary.

Dunno …ask Mr science

Well, it’s a very short clip of him talking about what seems like a hypothetical scenario. The fact that there’s no context is suspicious. Why did you think it was worth posting? Do you have some background information?

There is a slightly longer video further down where Zuckerberg asks him a question, but basically fauci answers in his usual style , comments are interesting

Fauci was speaking in March 2020, explaining why trials had to be extensive - precisely because of antibody-dependent enhancement. He refers to an HIV vaccine that did indeed have that property, and failed trials accordingly. It was certainly a theoretical possibility for the covid vaccines.

It absolutely not a characterization of what the covid vaccines have actually been doing in the 21 months since he made the statement.

Didn’t fauci deny talking to Zuckerberg before Congress previously?

Not that I am aware of, it would seem odd given that they live-streamed that session in March 2020 and at least one other in November 2020 when the first emergency use authorizations were made, then allowed them to be posted to Youtube and indexed by info providers like Reuters and Bloomberg.
