The Corona Pandemic

Thanks, I’ve phoned JK and told him I’m not available for the Shrewsbury game on Sunday. I’ll also be trialling the ‘malt whiskey’ vaccine, during the next week or so in self isolation.

that’s the best kind. I hear the older ones are particularly effective at easing the symptoms.

Look after yourself bud.

This has all the feeling of a stomach bug circulating in your home now. Not a case of if, more of when. Quite scary if I’m honest

Annoy would be better than hassle.
It’s not what a ‘politician’ should say however Macron isn’t a politian (as I keep saying) and that sentence passes well with me.

Your other comments are completely bonkers, what’s got into you?

Ahh! we have very different interpretations, it really isn’t tvery vulgar, well not here!
I agree it’s not something a president should say but imo it’s permissable particularly if the circumstances are there for it and I think they are.
I mean the unvaccinated are being emmerder in most western countries with restrictions on entering restaurants and much more (large supermarkets. To tell people that they are being emmerder when they are and that will continue is just honest. Anyway it’s not a big deal for me.
Came home from work, bumped into my neighbour who I haven’t seen for 4 days. He told me he had Covid, wasn’t vaccinated and it knocked him out. That it’s all over town … I think he should be pushed into annoyance by the measures, nothing wrong with being Franck.

Out of interest where do you get the figure of 1/3, 1/4 whatever of the population in France are unvaccinated. Official figures are 91% ‘fully’ vaccinated (i.e 2 jabs) of the adult population (i.e voters). That leaves 9% unvaccinated, I think in politics you can piss and shit on that percentage.

Sent by Allah apparently! :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Till the end!

Definite upkick in UK deaths over the last few days now. Big question is how far it will continue to climb as case numbers continue to sky rocket.

As a rough estimate that’s a 2 week delay from when cases rapidly kicking up as a result of Omicron

Yeah, it’s really the question of trust. Can I trust my government and my health authorities or can I not? Everything else results from that fundamental decision.

In fact, you could look at the vaccination rate in every state, and deduct from it the trust level between their respective authorities and their population.

Well fair enough, I was wrong on these numbers and take the point.

For the rest, I stay by my opinion that having a go at the non-vaccinated like Macron did was totally unworthy of his position, crude and vulgar. This guy confirms once again that he’s a complete shit-head in my opinion.

Nota bene : as I’ve already stated, I’m not against the measures taken against the non-vaccinated, which are basically the same as in every other European country. But I’m against this deliberately inflammatory way of expressing oneself against a part of the population. Whether it’s 25% or 9% is irrelevant. You don’t do that when you are the president of a country.

i realise that however respectfully disagree, at some point the dots on the i’s and crosses on the t’s need to be spelt out and my interpretation of what he said is that. He’s talking to the French and using pire pressure, that’s a useful ‘weapon’.

Politically the %age is relevant. Let’s face it he’s not talking to French snobs!

As of December 27, 61% of the 18+ population in Indiana were fully vaccinated. (54% of the State’s eligible population… there has been a slower uptake with vaccinating children).

A large number of people in this Republican State are not vaccinated.

DeSantis announced yesterday he is looking to release near 1 million at home tests to seniors in Florida.

The actual story is that these are tests they’ve been sitting on for months and have let expire. Twice. They initially let them expire in storage in September, claiming the lack of testing demand meant there was no use for them. The state then petitioned the FDA to get a 3-month extension on the expiration so they could be used later if needed, and despite getting it they just continued to sit on them, even after a new wave hit in which our testing resources were completely overwhelmed and the entire state was crying to Tallahassee for some state help (their fucking job). Their current claim is that they had to let them expire, even this second time, because there was no demand for the test. An arguably acceptable claim for the initial expiration, but just a lie so brazen for the second expiration that I am stunned, even in this political environment, anyone has the balls to utter. The lack of testing capacity and Tallahassee’s complete absence in the response has been the lead story just about every day in every Florida outlet for the past 3-4 weeks.

In December, his main challenger for the seat this year went public with the info that 1 million state owned tests were about to expire despite there being an overwhelming unmet demand for testing resources in the state, and his administration responded by forcefully denying the claim and attacking the person making the claim. They were denying it and still attacking her even up until wednesday, the day before they found them and publicly admitted they had them. At no point yesterday did they acknowledge this prior discourse.

Now before he can send these tests, he has to petition for a second extension of their expiration, and so is blaming Biden for getting in the way of getting needed tests to the people. This is just such astonishing gaslighting.

The key stat i’m watching with interest is COVID patients on mechanical ventilators. Currently hovering around high 800’s for the UK. In Jan2021 we got a high of 4,000 so we are currently way short of capacity (in case anyone was thinking we were triaging ventilators) and I assume we have more ventilators now than in Jan21.

While that start remains steady I remain calm.

Tasmania, like the rest of Australia, is an unfolding clusterfuck.

This is a state that closed it borders to all other states for 18 months. 1489 new cases from 5208 statewide daily tests. Queues being turned away at 7am as they have already run out of tests. Cases started skyrocketing when they opened the borders on 15/12 without any staged roll-back. Government is doing very little to curb the spread.

Brother-in-law’s entire family (22 people) have all tested positive this week. The amount of positives in the community must be tremendous. This is a state with a very ageing population so the next few weeks are going to be rocky.

Can’t stand DeSantis. Cut from the same cloth as Trump, but cleverer and much younger. If that sort of person ends up holding sway in the Republican Party, we are in big trouble. I am hoping some sanity is restored and the likes of Cheney stand strong and get some breakthrough.

It was notable yesterday that when old man Dick Cheney came to the capital to support his daughter, he was greeted by many Democrats and there wasn’t a Republican in sight.

The Cheney’s are as conservative as they come. Obviously as VP Dick Cheney got a lot of blood on his hands with the Iraq War. They are pro gun, anti abortion, cut taxes… died in the wool conservative Republicans.

And yet… these days they are outliers with what the Republican Party has become. I don’t want to go over the Cheney record and debate it, but I will say they are proper, old school, principled politicians… whether one agrees with the positions or not.

But today’s Republican Party is such a shitshow, that democracy is genuinely in danger here. All politicians lie and fudge the truth here and there. But the scale of the lie the Republican Party is swallowing, en masse, is astonishing.

That is incredibly good news but its also worth considering the other angle which is while you have people on Covid wards other treatments are delayed. There’s also an unprecedented level of NHS staff now off work due to Covid, burn out, stress and everything else that these poor people have had to cope with.

What a terrible state we’re in when Cheney is the beacon of morality.
