The Corona Pandemic

Hello mate, you know I’m not a native speaker, don’t you …

epidemiologisch?

Another one bites the dust…

It’s very sad that she died and a tragedy for her family, but what a stupid, idiotic, decision to take. Why didn’t she just go and play Russian roulette?

unscheduled press conference today called by our Gov’t reps tasked with handling the Covid response.

the dialogue has completely changed. so has the isolation protocols and testing requirements.

the word “doublespeak” ringing very loud right now. None of this makes any sense from what we were told 18months ago. The fluidity in which they are changing the rules and affecting people’s livelihood is unfuckingbelievable right now. one of our friends who doesn’t want to be vaccinated for personal reasons is being laid off his job because he’s not getting the shot. They cannot force people to get vaccinated, he’s a fucking landscaper for the city. why does a landscaper need to get vaccinated, they work outdoors FFS?

Well, what we knew 18 months is at best only marginally relevant. Different states of knowledge, different variant. But there are a lot of steps being taken that don’t stand up to a great deal of scrutiny right now. The 5-day isolation has no real basis in science, there are multiple studies finding that a significant percentage of people require longer.

The thing is, we can and do force people to get vaccinated. It has happened for decades, just not for covid. What people do for a living has never been a factor in that. That choice doesn’t have any legal protection.

Currently self-isolating having tested positive yesterday. Whole family (wife also positive, kids negative although must have it) all feeling a range of cold to mild flu symptoms.

Bored already!

I hope you and the family have a swift recovery. I also had mild symptoms and it was 8 days before I tested negative.

been planning dinners with friends separately instead of a bit party for my wife’s 45th coming up in 3 weeks. 4 consecutive Saturdays and a mid week in the middle.

Of course, we get a covid exposure on Sunday morning when my wife went to bottle wine, so now I’m stuck in the house all week (even though our new exposure rules say otherwise, I don’t believe that safety has an on/off switch like the government likes to believe). I have a headache for the last 36hrs which tells me if I could actually find a test, it’d be positiive.

You see a ton of nonsense about the vaccines and what they do, even more so with Omicron and how commonly we are seeing “breakthrough” infections. Given this, it is important to remember that despite this it is still true that the vaccine provides significant protection against transmission (yes, its a preprint, but it supports multiple lines of data).

So when people talk about “personal choice”, and ask why I care if I am fully vaccinated, this is why. Continuing to not be fully vaccinated (which means boosted) allows for increased community transmission. Not only does this make the situation generally worse, in terms of direct affects on me it makes my vaccine less effective at protecting me.

Get your god damn shots.

Omicron now overwhelmingly the dominant variant in Switzerland. Roughly 40k declared infections per day for a population of eight millions, but they estimate the real number to be near 100k a day! I have lots of people around me currently in and out of quarantine. It’s quite spectacular.

But fortunately, the national hospitalization (intensive care) rate is still declining, and the death rate has stabilised itself at a relatively low level (around 15 deaths a day).

Omicron BA.2, the variant coming from Denmark, which is apparently even more infectious than the original one, has now been identified in Switzerland as well. Doesn’t seem to be more aggressive, but even more efficient in transmission!

New cases in Wales are now down to pre Omicron levels. That suggests that there’s still a base level of infection circulating. I do wonder if that is still the Omicron variant. More research needed.

the Uk as a whole appears to be settling or stalling at a higher level than previously.

Also worth noting that there are different restrictions in play across the UK.

Does anyone here still believe in a zero COVID approach? I’m just trying to understand where everyone sits here.

I had been a strong advocate of it. For me the turning point was back in September/October when here in the UK, cases totally skyrocketed and I was sure there hospitalisations would go crazy too, and although they increased, they didn’t reach the levels I was expecting. I think from that point on I could see the horizon at least.

I’m still mask wearing indoors (one of the very few) as I don’t particularly want the virus because I’ve never had it, (I don’t think) but at some point, maybe in spring when infections go down, I’ll do away with that too if it looks like the right thing to do.

To me, its like even though you know you can never be perfect, you should never stop trying. For Covid, I believe that we have to open up even if we know that human interaction is the biggest factor in spreading Covid but we cannot be stopping that forever, so like what you did, that people need to do what else they can do to ensure they keep that risk to a minimum, like wearing a mask, keeping your hand washing and sanitation routines intact etc. Eventually the mask wearing might go (but actually in some places, such a practice has been around long before Covid was around and it becomes like wearing clothes) but for now, while opening up is the right thing, protecting yourself and people around you by doing simple things like mask wearing and proper hygiene are also right things to do.

No, I think it’s round for a while yet but the two questions I have are:

  1. will it become a minor thing where it becomes less harmful etc?

2)what kind of booster programme will we end up with?

Last thing that bugs me is this thing has basically allowed all the nut jobs to run riot. Dunning Kruger may well be the demise of the human race.
