UK has passed the grim total of 50k deaths from Covid today. Highest in Europe I think.
If you go by the excess death figure from the ONS the number is far higher.
But the government are proud of their response to the virus.

BoJo said yesterday that “we’re not out of the woods yet”.
From everything I see, we are in the deepest darkest woods still. Scares me that some folk think we are getting close.
What the fuck is even going on that allows you to start a game with test results still outstanding?
Apparently, MSF is sending workers to the US to help localities with their coronavirus crisis.
That is absolutely astonishing, and somewhat obscene. I wonder how many of those volunteers ever imagined they would be working in North Dakota?
Fascinating tool, horrendous implications.
There are multiple counties where there is near certainty that if you gather 10 people together, at least 1 will have an active case of covid. If you adjust the gathering size, that scales rapidly
It is getting a lot worse here. Mandatory masks on public transports in Oslo. Second wave is here I guess. Even in my region, there is some infection now and there are lots of restrictions on most everything.
6 new deaths today, we now have a total death toll of 291 (which is still incredibly low of course)., however we have now 110 people in hospital. 21 in intensive care, 12 on respirators.
Norwegians are generally, with some exceptions of course, very good at following government directives and we have 0 demonstrations or stupid stuff like that, and everyone I have seen in grocery stores and other stores try to keep 2 meters distance etc. No one but very close friends shake hands anymore, I can’t remember to have seen a single hand shake. In Volda, where I live, there was a big ruckus, plastered in all the newspapers, including the national ones, since some students had a party with 40 people, that were broken up by police. They were publicly shamed and the mayor and everyone on Facebook called them out (not with their faces shown in papers of course), but since the municipality had not made it into a directive (that 20 people are max for gatherings), they cannot be charged or anything like that. They will not do it again though.
Anyway, even though it is is worse here, we are still one of the better places to be in Europe, so perspective I guess. Our restrictions, while tough, are nothing like those of you who have it much worse and live with new lock downs and seriously tragic stuff like that, so I don’t want to exaggerate how bad it is here. It is worse, but not really bad.
My sincere sympathy for those of you who have to live with much higher infection rates and so much more severe restrictions in your lives.
Don’t want to complain, compared to some other countries I guess it could be worse, but I still think the politicians on state level here in Germany fucked up the second wave response, this was all predictable imo. And the school situation is also still a worry imo.
That being said, on a more positive note - I’m somewhat proud of my home town - we managed not to make complete fools out of ourselves yesterday, the start of Carnival (usually absolute mayhem, seriously). I’m sure there were still some private parties and wouldn’t be surprised if we see that in the numbers in the next few weeks, but overall this went better than many (including myself) had feared.
Our fucking goofball of a PM, I call him Cassetete, admitted they had anticipated the 2nd wave. So why didn’t they do anytyhing before now?
What a bitch. Just when we were thinking that we might have got away, four members of my family get infected.
I went to a funeral last Thursday, for a relative who died from COVID. At per the family’s request, mourners who were allowed to attend, wore Liverpool shirts and scarves. He was carried into the crematorium, to the sound of You’ll Never Walk Alone. It was very emotional and moving.
Thoughts are with you both
Stay safe
Crossing fingers for you
Best of luck, hope all works out well for you.
Hang in there, take it as easy as you possibly can, minimize your possible exposure, and give your body every chance to fight through it early. We still don’t know a great deal about why some people sail through and others have a terrible time, but viral load appears to be a huge part of it.
Hoping for the best for you and your family.
Viral load most definitely, but as well as mask wearing, washing hands and sneeze /cough etiquette, what else could potentially help us through this at this time of year.
Earlier this year we heard a lot about vitamin C and D. With lack of sunshine and dark days in a lot of countries during winter, is there evidence, research or something else to suggest these vitamins can/will help
As far as I know, the vitamins offered nothing compelling beyond the normal health benefits, which in turn help your immune system fight the virus.
