The Corona Pandemic

I’m glad you added mostly at the end, because I know a few Liverpool fans who don’t wear a mask and generally behave like dicks as far as the virus is concerned. They more than qualify as ‘fuckwits’.

There were some in the crowd at Anfield

Probably but the real issue here is large nuumbers of untested people moving round. I suspect this weekend was always going to be busy thinking about it. Is it right that people that normally live and work in London go and spend time with Mum and Dad?

yes, most probably. I would imagine a significant proportion of people living in London were not born here. I wasn’t, and many of the people i have met, studied or worked with weren’t either. Many of us are from other parts of the country.

Just reading that Twitter thread you posted in the politics page. Seems they knew about the new strain in September which makes the whole response even more heartbreakingly hopeless.

Drakeford has also said the new strain is more aggressive and more easily transmitted.

Simply have to agree with that.

I don’t understand the importance of this mutation which was 1st sequenced in Brazil in April and has been identified in Auistralia (june/july) and USA (July). There are over 300k variants sequenced in the world. The UK government are using this for what ever reason.
Let’s face it if we had observed a proper confinement from the beginning this sort of shit would be a lot less prevalent.
I hear EU countries are ‘stopping’ air travel from the UK now. Why wasn’t this in place anyway?

All true. I’d laugh if Boris using this second strain as a convenient excuse to do another U-turn will actually cause him other issues regarding the UK being shut out.

Loads of countries with travel bans to UK now, Canada likely within the next 2 hours.

I guess the key point remains the details of the measures the French have imposed. Hard to see how flow of goods can continue unless trucks are exempted - which would all but defeat the purpose.

At least Bozo has got what he always craved: British, or more specifically English, exceptionalism being recognised by the rest of the world.

Well, you’ve got to admit we’ve been exceptional at this… exceptionally bad.

I have read a little on this and I’m unsure if this is the same mutation we were talking about back in the Autumn that was identified as being contagious. It seems it is but I haven’t seen that explicitly stated and the tone of the reporting seems to suggest not. But then my expectation of science reporting is for them to get the story meaningfully wrong.

48 hours complete closure, apparently including freight trucks/lorries

Presumably the 48 hours is so they can provide some time to improve the understanding of what the variant actually is and does? Maybe get some kind of screening in place? I cannot think of what other purpose it would serve. I vaguely recall that model that showed what the effect of adding a 3 minute document processing step would have on the line at Dover, I shudder to think what a testing stop will add.

Saw a statement that traffic into the UK is not affected, but that means a one way flow of drivers, that won’t last. I pity the European driver who is supposed to deliver a load in the UK tomorrow and head home.

Hmm yeah, I suspect many will just pull the plug.

Yep, they are trying to find out more and agree on a common European response. At least that’s the official explanation.
Btw I’ve heard similar doubts (not certainties) to the ones expressed on here about the severity of the new variant from one of the leading German virologists.
