He’s incredible tbf. Just hope there’s not a ‘story’ coming out about him in the years ahead. There was one stage last year when he was cruising past people on a steep hill like they were amateurs. They were shaking their heads in disbelief
I know. He’s a freak and that does worry me. It’s borderline Armstrongesque to be honest. He’s so young too. Barring injury and desire he could make the TdF a 1 man race for a good few years yet.
Stupidly I used to enjoy watching Armstrong race but having been burned I struggle a bit to get behind Pog in the same way.
I can’t get behind him either. He’s too dominant in a sport where historically, dominance like this is often not above board. That reputation isn’t his fault but the level of dominance is always going to raise a few eyebrows.
I can’t warm to Roglic either. Don’t know what it is but I find the idea of him winning equally as unsatisfying. Maybe it’s that he has this mega team built to win him the Tour and each year he finds a way of not doing so. Bit like Sky I guess but without the affinity for a couple of their riders back in the day.
I said to a mate the best thing that could happen for this tour would be for Pog to lose some decent time on everyone else early on and then watch him chase them down whilst the rest played defence. Unfortunately the opposite has happened and we could well just see a procession from here unless Vingegaard can get close to him and Jumbo put their full weight behind him.
I’m playing catch up with you guys having just watched Stage 5 and I’ve figured out what bugs me most about Pog.
He’s damn perfect. Nothing ever goes wrong for him, no crashes, mechanicals etc. but also his ability to put himself in the right position ALL the time. Stage 5 was another case in point, Ignores his team as soon as the race hit the cobbles and go to the front and stayed trouble free for the rest of the race despite being isolated.
It’s just fucking wrong that everything he does in a race is so fucking perfect.
Crazy. Matthews deserves credit for being in that position considering the climbs in the last km but none of the other GC contenders could stay with him either.
This guy is not only better than everyone else he’s on a whole different level. He makes seasoned GC winners look like park riders but its the other stuff that gets me. Every stage, its perfection from him. His positioning within the peloton is perfect, his awareness of everything and everyone around him is uncanny. He knows who to follow, who to watch and then does enough stage after stage to get himself in front and keep himself there. It’s not exactly spectacular, it’s almost systematic destruction of the whole peloton by knocking bits off day by day.
I cant think of anyone else that has been anywhere near anything like this.
Everyone else can only hope that because he essentially rides without a team that they can break him in the mountains but I think that needs multiple teams working together and having to think outside the box. I dont think traditional tactics to isolate and break someone works with this guy.
