You do realise that counties that have been facing a viable threat, such as the Baltics, Poland and Greece have kept up their military expenditures, yes?
It made zero sense for Germany and Britain for instance, to do so after the end of the Cold War.

I heard yesterday that the EU is considering a very effective counter-measure against the US tariffs, without having to reply with reciprocal tariffs (which would only create inflation and be a shot in one’s own knee): blocking US companies from participating in calls to bid for big European contracts.
That would hurt the US export economy enormously, while having minimal impact on the domestic market.
